W108 heater blower motor
I took the cruiser out last evening to buy some of the cheapest gas I have seen in some time. On the way home the heater fan quits...........bad news. Then a second later we smell the unmistakable odor of burned motor windings.........really bad news.
So I jump on the forum and read what an awful job it is to replace this motor. One post said a trained Benz mechanic would need 8.5 hours........so this is at least a three week project for an amateur. Great! But I have a question. I see you can buy the entire blower assembly, but one site had just the motor. Would it be best to replace the entire 42 year old assembly since you go through so much work to get at it? Or can the motor be replaced and keep original fan wheel? Would appreciate any feedback. Ron 1972 280SE 4.5 my cruiser. |

I would replace the entire assembly because an additional plastic fan and set set of bearings arenīt that expensive. Besides, there is a good possibility that the bearings caused the burning-up of the motor.

Go for the motor and fan together. As weird as it may seem there is some balancing that needs to be done even with the plastic fans and there is a good chance the unit you buy with the fans attached has been balanced.

Thanks guys. Took your advice and ordered the assembly. Really need a working defroster in our climate.
