The W123 14" dish type aluminum wheels are much lighter that the bundt alloys. Also the 190SL group can supply a larger diameter front sway bar.

Looks like fun!

Thought you might like to see some pictures I took of the 190SL racer belonging to the MB Classic Center. The 300SL and 190SL were used in the "The Classic
Adelaide Rally" in Australia some years back. How do I attach photos on this site??

Great pics ja17! And fantastic feedback everyone!

We have the 190SL on stands and can now take a really good look at the entire car, where improvements can be made both mechanically and visually plus the immediate priority is to make it a safe and reliable driver. Once we have that baseline, we can focus on the major items. Down the road, we'd like to modify the roll hoop to a single hoop over the driver rather than the current full-width hoop and perhaps source a more applicable wheel set.

So up on stands she goes!

Under the hood, we had some clearance issues and did not care for the K&N look, so today we modified a set of Porsche Weber air filters to work on the side draft Webers.

Here's a before shot of the K&Ns:

Missing hardware, yikes!

And here are the new filters ready to go:

New filters installed.....much better!

Now the clearance issue is solved and the overall look is vastly improved, much cleaner looking:

Nice looking car ! .

These were more Sports Cars than Race Cars , fun o drive but easily out speeded by others with larger engines .

That's not what Sports Cars are all about .

Looking forward to seeing the progress .

BTW : no need to safety wire those air cleaner wing nuts ~ just do like they did back in the day : cut one ear off and they CANNOT vibrate off no matter how much you buzz / shake the engine .

Simple , eh ? .

For those of you who don't think these cars are competitive...

The most recent Past President of the 190SL Group raced his 190SLS regularly. He had no problem with any of the 113 cars, or the 107s. Regularly beat them. Even the 300SLs, he was competitive with. You can criticize the car as underpowered. But set up right, on a course with lots of curves, you might be surprised.

The 190sl were pieces of crap when they were new, and they are still pieces of crap.

HAHAHA! That piece of crap, as you call it, in my garage is the single best financial investment I've ever made. Several have sold over $300,000, and a decent driver is over $100,000.

For a 50s car, they were pretty well advanced.

I have driven a few 190SL's and one in reasonable condition is a great drive. perhaps those who criticise them have only ever read about them or driven a tired one.
I am curious though, the front king pins are the same as the W111 etc chassis cars but you can't fit the spindles to the 190 SL because the arms are too long . If they are fitted ,the turning circle is reduced and the handling goes out the door.
Have the 280 Spindle arms been shortened? .

In Australia,Mercedes Dealer BEA, have the only remaining W127 220SE SL ever built .It was one of three built to see if a Fuel injected smaller sports car was viable. As the tests showed,it was too light in the rear (fixed by adding sand bags....) and because the pagoda design was already completed there it was decided not to try and market them. And,it would have been pointless building the older style car along side the. new pagoda.
The M127 was removed and a 190 engine installed. The car was sold through the Australian dealer net work. It wasn't until almost 50 years later that someone questioned the Chassis number (W127) and the odd looking firewall .

I'm sure we are all rather curious as to your knowledge base and experience that allows you to make such a broad negative comment. Please educate us.

Was that Steve Marx? He is the president of the Gullwing club. He raced both a Gullwing and a 190SL. I believe he sold it, though.

Coolest 190SL I ever saw

I bought my for W201 190E 2.3-16 from the owner of Sportsleicht. He had a 190SL painted silver, windshield removed and replaced with two small Porsche Speedster type windscreens, and best of all, the heart of the car was a 23-16 engines.

Totally bad ass.
