W110 Rear Seat Belt questions

I recently acquired a 1964 190D. There are no rear seat belts. My understanding is that all the required holes are predrilled and tapped so that I can buy belts and install them. Has anyone done this?

Hey DHW,

My 69 didn't have rear belts when I got it either. When I removed the rear bottom cushion I found the holes already there with the bolts installed. All I had to do was buy generic airplane style lap belts and install...pretty easy

There should also be bolt locations on the hat shelf for shoulder belts. I've installed three point modern seat belts made to order in a few fin cars.

Do any of you happen to know the size of bolts I need for this? I thought it was M10 X 1.5mm but that seemed too big, unless I grabbed the wrong size out of the bin.

Ahh I have another question, I can only find two mounting holes not three. One on the rear deck near the rear window, one for the buckle end near the middle of the car. I can't find the one that should be near the wheel hump. Any ideas? I've pulled the sound proofing back some and nothing. Were some cars made with mounting holes only for shoulder belts? I really want a 3 point system for hauling my kids in car seats. Should I just drill my own mounting holes?

(unfortunately I am not answering your most recent question, but...)

I have put car seats in cars with lap belts, older 3 point belts which require that special locking buckle, newer 3 point belts which don't require that special locking buckle, and the LATCH system. Of all of them, using lap belts is the easiest to install, probably tied for most secure (least movement) with the LATCH system, and definitely the safest. While not well understood, the "state of the art" LATCH system has a maximum child weight of 40 lbs. My 2 y.o. is about to pass that. If you just use a very snug lap belt, the seat has no way to move and it is way stronger than the latch system. After the kids are out of their seats, then yes, a 3 point belt will be safer than my current lap belts. But for now, I am very happy with just lap belts in the back of my 1968 220d to hold the kid's car seats.

Sorry I cannot help you find that other bolt hole. In my 220D, the lower bolt holes are just below the junction between the seat back and the seat bottom. So you would have to remove the seat bottom to see them, but not the seat back. Probably not helpful info, but I thought I should share.

Thanks Shortsguy, I have the seat out, back and bottom, and I am thinking my car only has should belt mounts. Maybe a European model? I am guessing. I am not finding anything. I agree, lap belts are great for mounting car seats as are the LATCH system, I just don't want to do this again in 4 years.

The seatbelt bolts are a fine thread SAE thread, I think 3/8? I think they did that because seatbelt bolts are a higher grade and they did not want people to substitute them with just any bolt.

dobrodan, that thread was my inspiration! I appreciate the pictures you took. My biggest problems are the bolt size and not being able to find that third mounting point. Where you have your mounted on or near the wheel well, I cannot find a threaded mounting hole. Did you have to drill one?

Also it appears at though I have the same belts, only in black, but there is a third part on the extractor side that appears that it would mount on the c pillar. I've never seen that mounted that way in one of these cars, and was going for exactly what you did. Did you buy the belts as seen or did you modify that side? Thanks for chiming in.

I did not have to drill any holes for the rear belts. It took a while to find the attachment point next to the wheel well under the soundproofing. On the front belts there are three attachment points at the C pillar. One at the top, one at the bottom for the recoil and one on the floor next to the sill. Look at my pix to see it. All of the bolts are standard seat belt bolts. As I said in the other thread, I worked with the manufacturer and designed the belts so they were the right length and directions.
