1966 200D Knobs, Guages, Glow Plug ??

As a total newbie to diesel, can anyone here tell me what these knobs and guages indicate? I know the busted one that pulls out is for the glow plug and will have to be replaced. Also, this coil thing that is wired to the glow plugs? I don't have a manual on this model and any help much appreciated.

Hello Tubbers,

There is a diagram on a thread regarding knobs and gauges on recent thread for the 1967 250 Coupe that may be helpful. Might give a clue?

Thread is here: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes/364671-dash-layout-1967-w111.html

Thanks Jeffrey, but that's a completely different model and looks like a gas engine. Amazing how hard it is to find info on this car. I think I will have to go directly to Mercedes.

In your first picture, starting from top left and going clockwise:

Air Vent for heater, Idle control knob, glow status indicator, headlight switch, wiper blades, hazard lamp switch

Second photo:

Unsure of order, but one of them is Parking Brake Actuation light, High Beam indicator, and third is likely turn signal indicator

Third Photo:

Starter engaging knob. This is also the knob that gets the glow plugs active before to engaging the starter.

Last photo:
Resistor for reducing current to glow plugs.

An update on what I've been doing. I decided to install the 'Mercedes Source' glow plug updated system with pencil glow plugs, push button, relay and in-line 80 amp fuse. This bypasses the glow plug indicator light but it doesn't seem to be a problem. The only trouble I had was removing one glow plug and after that it was all pretty easy to install. The old style glow plugs actually looked pretty clean and must not have been used much, but all those old, funky, Rube Goldberg wire connections had to go. I made a button bracket for the glow plugs and also mounted a separate starter button. The pull switch still has to be used for starting and stopping. I also replaced the heater hose from the firewall to the head. That was fairly easy too. Now, I just need to replace the right rear tail light lens and the two front turn signal lenses, then check all the lights. I'll also have to look at the brakes again as the pedal is pretty hard. I may just replace the remaining 3 wheel cylinders. But I have to say, that after sitting for 10 plus years in the garage the engine started, ran a bit rough, then it just calmed down and idled beautifully. Amazing. I will also be changing the oil soon. It only needs the registration and I am so anxious to get it out around town now. The clutch and tranny also seem to work fine.

Thumbs up

A quick update on my slow project. Last year I picked up a left rear tail light on EBAY from Istanbul for $35 + $15 to ship and it is in like new condition. What a find. The project has been dormant due to cold weather (don't want to risk New Monia) as it is sitting under a rickety car port. I am going to replace the front disc calipers next and I am so looking forward to driving it this summer. It will be a head turner in town, I'm sure.

It's actually in pretty rough shape. The green paint is faded and there's dings in the windshield. That doesn't bother me as I just want to get it road ready to drive around town in summer. Front disc calipers are next. It's all covered for now, but I promise I will post some pics.

No pics yet, but I did find the right side tail light in Germany along with the bulb holder and two plastic mounting knobs. All in excellent condition and cost $192 total.
