Question w115: removing door check strap - pin trapped underneath switch

Hey guys,

I'm trying to pull out a busted check strap on the drivers side door of my 76' 240D and removal of the pin is giving me problems. There's a plastic switch directly above it that prevents the pin from coming out. The pin hits the housing of the switch, not the button part, so simply depressing the button won't help. Any tips on getting this pin out?

I also tried removing the plastic washers on the top and bottom of the pin to allow a little more angle, but it still didn't clear.

Will I just have to open up the interior panel and pull out the switch? If so, how do you safely remove these panels without screwing them up?

thanks!

No need to pull the panel off! The clever Germans designed it so you just pull the light switch out. Just get a good grip on it and pull it straight out. Goes easy after that.

Pray that the 40 year old plastic is up to it! I didn't chance it, and removed the panel to get to the switch on one of my cars. My panel was just as damaged by water from a leaky windshield seal.

The under dash "covering" and floor mat must be out, and then you can move that side covering panel up and forward to get it out. It's got to come out of some little clips that are in with the pinch welt (two I think), and there might be one or two on the lower edge tied in with that grey plastic covering. In your panel pic you can just see the tip of one of those clips on the vertical edge, just up from the warped panel edge at the bottom. You can see the indent left by it in the vinyl covering that's shrunk back. Be glad you don't have speakers down there! Makes the panels more fragile.

If you can coax the switch out that would be a much simpler path. Or, if you want to make some new panels go ahead and remove the old ones. It's tricky to get water damaged ones back in, with the vinyl peeling and brittle cardboard. I've wanted to make new ones but haven't so far. Other fish to fry!

I can just pull the light switch out?! Hah, I can't believe I didn't try that...I've got to get used to these Germans thinking of everything.

Thanks for the panel removal instructions. Replacing those is on my list too, but also pretty low compared to other more serious issues.

I'll report back on Monday when I get back to working on the car.

I found one randomly on ebay. MB still offers them and I think Pelican can get you one. Can't get window regulators for my 115 it seems. . .

Joshhol-
Will you remind me exactly what you were looking for (part #)? I took apart a w114 with electric windows, so maybe they are the same part as you need. They all worked when I took apart the car.

For my remaining functioning 3 checkstraps I was thinking of cleaning and regreasing them with moly grease. That sound like a good idea? The grease on them is pretty filthy and crusty.

w115: removing door check strap - pin trapped underneath switch

Lithium. Although the OG method is bee's wax. It won't get on your dates dress when you are out at the opera

Gotta go check if I have that strap. Working sorry.
