W109 Door

Good Morning.

The front drivers side door on my 300SEL has rusted out at the bottom way beyond repair. Does anybody here know of anyplace where i can find a good used front door for a W109?

Thanks,
John

W108 front door is the same, only the interior trim is different. Much easier to find a 108 door...

Might give a call to Bud's Benz in Douglasville (770) 942-8444. I'd assume that they've got some parts cars at their disposal...

The front doors for a W108 and W109 are pretty much the same. The door for the W109 has some modifications for the chrome trim around the window frame. I wonder if a W108 door can be modified so the chrome trim can be attached? Does anybody know?

The Hollander Interchange manual from that era says all 108/109 front doors, from 1967 to 1973, are the same.

I am sure the chrome trim you have would fit. Just be very careful when you are taking it off as it not only will bend but will cut your hands open like a gutted fish due to its' sharp edges.

Your 300 should have electric windows , right? . The W109 doors have different shaped panel inside the frame for Electric windows.
To fit a W108 Door you need to cut the window frame from the W109 door and weld it to the W108 door. the window frames are completely different . The Chrome is both screwed on and glued into place with mastic to prevent rattles and moisture getting between them. The screws are impossible to buy outside germany so be very careful when you undo them.
The correct rubbers are the only ones to use,but are $300 each these days. The off brand ones are hopeless .

I was wrong! W108 doors are different part numbers than W109 doors. Good to know! Even W109 doors have different 109 part numbers over the lifecycle... I would think you might be opening a can of worms to use a 108 door. Sorry for the earlier misinformation.

It is inconceivable to me that 109 doors are FUNDAMENTALLY different from 108 doors. both cars have the exact same body shell and door openings (in the 108 L model for back doors). The difference is in trim items, outside and in. I can't comment on how difficult it would be to transfer 109 exterior trim to a 108 door, however. However, a call to Mercedes Benz Classic Center in Ervin, CA might be able to help on that question

I think it's mostly the window frame which is designed for different trim.

Hm, interesting; did no 108s come with power windows down under? Many (if not most) 108s sold stateside had them, I believe.

Thats rigfht, including the 280SE 3.5's .I have never owned a W108 with power windows and I think I have only ever seen one here. W109's were almost plentiful though and nearly all were specced right up with a lot of options. i see a vendor on ebay selling the regulators new so I have ordered a few for customers cars including a W108 3.5 which will be retro fitted with power windows.

Inconceivable but true. Most of us 6.3 owners who have had to replace a door or two over the years have found it easier to simply cut the window frame off the damaged door and weld it to the replacement door .The body shells of W108's are 100mm shorter BTW.

I suppose welding on the window frame wouldn't be that much work.
I don't think that the body shells of 108s and 109s are different. I think the body shells of SEs vs SELs is different (by 10cm). Perhaps 109s only came as SELs in Australia and 108s only came as SEs? In the states it's either or.

As for the door body being different, I found it odd that I could find LOTS of different door shell part numbers for 109 sedans (just assuming front doors for the moment) and only one part number for 108 sedans. There was no difference in door shell for a 108 with or without electric windows.

I think electric windows were an option in the world, standard in the US. But I can't say that for sure.

I was able to source a good W109 front drivers side door with no problems. It is a rust free door from Cali.

Most of the W108's i've seen here in the states have power windows. The W108's i've seen with manual windows were usually early cars 66-68. From what i've been told MBUSA wanted to portray an image of high end luxury cars here in the USA so many w108's were fitted with power steering, power windows, automatic transmission, A/C, and in many cases leather interiors.

I've never seen a US-spec 108 that didn't have power steering, power brakes, radio, power windows, and AC. If they had sunroofs they were power sunroofs. Most are automatics, and most that I've seen have MB-tek interiors. No US 108 cars had either cloth or velour interiors. I did score a set of Nackenrolle front headrests from a 67 250S that I think was a US car as I recall...
