280SEL 4.5 temp sender failure
I was driving along in my 1972 4.5 when my temperature gauge slowly went to zero and stayed there. I saw it happen, very odd. I guess the sender failed which I think screws into one of the cylinders heads opposite the firewall. Has anyone had this happen? Is it just a matter of replacing the sender? Does the coolant have to be drained?

The entire temp gauge has to be replaced. You have a mechanical temp gauge, with a long capillary tube that runs from the gauge to the right side of the engine. There is no way to disconnect the gauge from the tube.

Mike, thanks for info. I have a shop manual on the way, but let me understand you correctly. The guage, capillary tube and sender are one unit that cannot be separated? So the instrument cluster has to be removed no matter where the leak has occurred?

Exactly. The gauge, capillary tube and sensor end are all one unit. You will have to pull the cluster to replace the gauge.
