The two pictures of the speedo of my '72 280ce were taken on a trip to the Techno Classica show in Essen. Although they indicate speeds of 130-140mph, I think the actual speed was closer to 120-130mph. It did feel very fast and it blew the head gasket in the process!

I had the 190Db up to 60 according to my friends GPS. With that car's current health, I wouldn't want to try to max it out.

1980 300CD at 96.7 on the GPS. 1975 280 (six w/4b Solex) 126MPH flat out, nothing left. Both cars still cruisin. Both handled like on tracks at speed. Those great brakes are a confidence builder. I keep them in good tires, good alignment and suspension. Otherwise and you're dead meat.

Had the '63 220S up to about 90. The shocks are old and my home turf is overpopulated so I didn't stay there long. She felt fine, plenty of power left.
Had my grandfathers '74 450SE up to 90 like it was nothing, my '76 300D probably pushing 90 getting kind of loud, but I always baby her, and had the 73 280SEL 4.5 up to unknown velocities, the speedo doesn't respond.

Think I've had the 280SE up to an indicated 120mph or so. Was quite fun blowing by modern Bimmers and Audis. The 6.9 has seen close to 135mph. Felt like driving a sofa down the road.

Of course I can only state what the speedometer read.

1961 180b - 87 MPH
1966 230 - 93 MPH
1972 220 - 85 MPH
1972 250 - 98 MPH
1960 220S - 80+ MPH (Good for more but I didn't want to push 'Miss Daisy' too hard!)

Happy Motoring, Mark

My 132 indicated was done back in 1977 on a 60 degree day with Mobil 1 5W-20 oil in the crankcase. I think that was the only viscosity I could find back then. 60 deg was a bit warm for the 20W part of it, but it must have helped the top end a bit. No GPS back in those days, lucky for me no police radar was around to check my speed After that, however, I was getting puffs of blue smoke out the tailpipe. Hmmm. I've only had the 300TE up to about 95 or 100 or so. Too many slow people keep getting in front of me

I have had my 1979 300CD up to around 100mph, and I have gone 115mph in my brothers old BMW 320i, and almost 125mph in his 1990 Subaru Legacy.

I've had my old beast up to about 80. It still feels really strong but I'm afriad to make it go any faster. That's what the bimmer is for. I put a chip in the bimmer about 2 months ago, and just last week I tested its speed. Took it up to about 135mph. It was still pulling strong, I was just afriad to go any faster with stock suspension. I think I might have scared this guy in an accord who thought he could mess with me. Boy was he wrong when I started walking away from him at 120!

Not just how fast, but under what road conditions? At midnite on a two-lane county road my '80 240D runs 60-80 mph and the only thing I worry about is a deer or a drunk driver. Per dollar, the 240D is one of the fastest things around....

I've gotten my 250SE up to 85miles. My goal is to hit 88mph, so maybe the car will go to 1966, and i'll beable to get parts cheap. Though I do lack a flux capasitor

I've had my 73 280SEL 4.5 up to 105 indicated, during a spirited passing manuever- I wonder what she'll do if I really tried to max her out-

Is that pic on Rt 29? Watch out for the cops in Madison County. Lots of Radar.

Beautiful pic!

Thanks Warren-

Yeah, it's 29 south of c-ville. Not as bad as the section from c-ville to culpeper, but still I have to watch it!

VA state troopers are none too lenient...

here's another pic
