Clutch seal diagnosis.

A while ago the clutch on my 220D went, well by that I mean it felt like the hydraulics had sprung a leak.

I checked the fluid, it was full, and then pumped a bit and it was back to normal.

I though that maybe it was an air lock due to the hole in the cap for the clutch/ brake fluid cap being clogged.

I also thought I had got away with easiest clutch repair in history.

Yesterday I went on a long drive and had the same problem, although now it is getting worse and I had to remove the cap and pump after say an hours driving without changing gear.

So it looks like a seal is on the way out if not completely gone.

The reason I am posting this before climbing under the car is that maybe someone recognises the symptoms and can point me to exactly which seal it would be (slave/ master cylinder).

*The fluid stays full, so the leak must be replacing lost fluid with air.

*The brakes are not effected (same reservoir).

*The weird thing with the cap, could it indeed be an air lock?

I'm guessing it's one (of two?) of the seals of the master cylinder.

Any ideas?

They are cheap - do 'em both while you're under there, but you should be able to visually inspect the master from inside the car. You might want to do a search on bleeding the system. It is a wierd procedure.

Due to the age of my vehicles I have been renewing seals since the cows came home.

Normally they just go, you see a wet patch and the fluid is low.

I agree, bleeding the system is a weird procedure.
