De Fender ! De Fender!

Does anybody have some suggestions for how to deal with the glue that holds the front fenders onto the frame.

Is there a special knife or scraper .. should I use a torch to melt the glue??

I've tried gently prying the edge up but I don't think that wil be enough.

Adrian

The subject has been covered here before, can't recall how long back though. Seems I remember something about a heat gun being used to soften the adhesive.

Fender removal and Installation

I think I actually have a hotair gun somewhere.. I guess I knew I'd need it sometime??

I guess the hard part is getting the whole seam hot enough to lift off.. I think I'll focus on the front edge first as it seem the most reluctant to budge.

I finally got the fender off. The hotair gun worked great. Basically you focus on an area until it smokes a little bit and then it seems to remain pliable for a good while.

My question now is how to prep for installing the other car and painting.

The previous own of the parts car had started to strip the paint.

I want to make sure thjat there are no areas of the fender that end up not getting painted after it's installed.

I was thinking that maybe I should have the fender painted first and then install it?

Or can I just primer it and install it?

I plan on taking it to a commercial paint place like (1day paint, Maaco or Earl Schieb).. so it's not going to be a deluxe paintjob but I would like to make sure that no rust develops due to some parts not getting painted properly.

I am no expert on this, but you don't want to prime until you are ready to paint, because the primer can absorb moisture which will screw up the top coats. Most of the new sheet metal that I have seen has had a thin coat of paint on it - don't know what it is.

So it sounds like I should do a base prepaint before reinstalling but with what paint?? Any paint experts out there?
