Hi RIck,

I checked the floor pedal and did not get a timed wipe. I also didn't get any fluid out. So....I spent 2 hours flushing the system and getting the little nozzles cleaned out. I can see why they sell those nozzles new - if they are plugged, they are a pain to clean. I didn't dare take them off for I was worried that I'd break one, but I got the windshield washer fluid to flow.

I haven't checked the stalk switch nor the intermittent wipe contacts. Can you use my previous pics and show me which is pin 1 and which is pin 5?

The intermittent wiper failed when I was running it in intermittent mode. The intermittent mode was inconsistent - only working about 10% of the time. The last time I was running the intermittent wiper mode, it went to slow speed and stayed on - even if I had the steering column switch on or off. The high speed wiper and low speed wiper worked but would not shut off. When I removed the relay shown above, the low and high speed worked correctly and the switch shut them off.

I opened the relay box and looked at the contacts. One set of contacts (the double pole contacts) had welded themselves to one contact. I broke them apart and sanded them. This leads me to believe that a cap is probably bad (for don't the caps minimize sparking between the contacts). The caps all look fine, the resistors look fine and the diodes look fine and the coils have the right resistance. I think that one of the metal can caps went bad - but have no proof.

I ordered the new relay. I'm hoping that this fixes everything. If I can get hold of Techguy512, I would ask him if he still rebuilds these units so they are a programmable delay.

Thanks for the trouble shooting help!

Dave

Hi Dave,
Pin 1 (stamped J on the base) is the one closest to the white plastic index pin and pin 5 is stamped 31. Pin numbers are on the mating socket.
I haven't traced the circuit but those capacitors would not be for spark suppression at the points. At least one would be part of the timing circuit.

I wonder if your wiper motor is drawing too much current that the contacts welded together. Maybe part of the linkage is getting tight? I'm not sure what a normal draw is for that car.

Thanks Rich76.

I was busy cleaning the Oregon Beach yesterday. I'll try to go and measure the voltages/grounds on the pins. Thanks for giving me the relay/pin combination. The socket is not readable from the floor pan.

I don't think that the wiper linkage is tight, but I will grease it anyways.

My new relay has shipped. We'll see if it work.

Dave
