Introducing "Polly" 1957 220S Ponton

Hello Peaches,

Introducing Polly, the older sister of Dolly! The exterior color is white with a red leather interior.

Took delivery yesterday. Been sitting in the garage for a while...

This is the engine!

Some assembly required...

''

The owner gave up and decided to sell it. I am excited and terrified.

Looks like the body is sound. How about some pictures of the interior?

These cars look great in dark colors. Keep us posted of your progress!

Hi Tom,

Good luck was finding this car. Getting it running and driving will require engineering and science more than random chance or probabilities.

Rebuilding a motor that came in a hundred pieces seems like a daunting challenge, but that will make the accomplishment a bit more gratifying.

Life is good...

Jeffrey

Interior

The interior is in good condition. The seats, door cards and carpet look new. They could not possibly be original. There are companies that sell interior items using OEM design specifications. That is the only plausible explanation.

These pictures are from the ad on Craigslist. I will take better ones and post them soon...

Dashboard

I have to get a copy of the owner's manual to figure out what all the knobs and switches do...

This weekend I hope to get a better look and take some photos.

Thanks for the chuckle

Luck: Me finding a car for $350. Driving it home without issues. Finding the timing belt didn't break on me despite the timing pulley being frozen. Having a freak thunderstorm in February cause my gutter downspout to fall and smash its windshield.

In your case, good luck that all the engine parts are there and they can be reused with little to no reconditioning. The rest will be an intense labor of love. And, in some cases, engineering if you're like me and would be doing "Resto-mods" to the car!

congrats, intro to IPOG

Good Morning, and Congratulations!
Nice find! I have a 1958 220S with the Webasto Sunroof, and have been a member of a Yahoo group called International Ponton Owners Group (IPOG) for most of the 15 years I've owned the car. You can find a LOT of info there, and knowledgeable owners, as well as parts, links to parts sources, diagrams, literature, etc.... There is an associated website as well, Mercedes-Benz Pontons (1953-1962) © www.mbzponton.org that you should find very useful too. Both of these have literature in data bases, and owners post copies of their own info pertinent to current conversations. There are gatherings of fellow owners periodically that you might even be able to get to. Here's a link to the group;
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ponton/conversations/messages
It is a closed group, members only, but easy to join. Send a message to the moderator. Let me know if you have any problem finding it. The website is open to all, and I think has a link there to join IPOG. Also a page of cars and parts for sale.

Good Luck, I'm sure you'll do a great job with your project, but it never hurts to have more resources, or comrades in arms, as the case may be.

Bob Bush, aka Webasto Bob, or WBob, as I'm known on the list, due to having many "Bobs" on the list.

Hi Bob,

I am a huge fan of the Ponton Group. The members have built a tremendous collection of knowledge resources. I have been a member for many years.

You may recall that I was suggesting you take some photographs with your Ponton at Church Hill Downs? You sent me a kind reply...

Life is good.

Jeffrey
