1967 250S Clutch Master Cylinder - Need Advice
Hi,
I've got a 4-speed floor shifter that I'm working on bit-by-bit. It is my daily driver so I try not to do anything that will keep it out of commission for longer than the 2-day weekend. I don't have gear shifting problems; rather, I have long pedal play when depressing the brake pedal. I finally noticed that the carpet under the pedal assembly was wet with something. It was fluid from the clutch master cylinder. So, it is leaking fluid, I've got a long-traveling brake pedal, and I can hear a squishy sound (and a change in the sound of the engine) when I fully depress the brake pedal. I've looked underneath at the clutch slave cylinder to see if that was also leaking. It does not appear to be leaking. But, the rubber boot surrounding the lever from the transmission is deteriorated from age and that area is very oily. So I think I know that I have to replace the clutch master cylinder. My question is: Can I remove the old one, and install a new one without having to use an hydraulic press? - see collar or sleeve #60 and #61 from the parts catalog page. I've got a pic of the clutch master cylinder and a scan of the assembly from my 1965 Catalog "A" 12-110 (glovebox size). Thanks for any suggestions.

The clutch is a bolt on replacement. Two bolts hold it on the firewall. The hydraulic fluid line screws on. Pretty easy job.

The part number is 000 295 00 35 for the hydraulic hose from the slave cylinder attached to the transmission to the clutch master cylinder. Our host here at Peach Parts sells it for $36.00.

Have you been adding fluid to either the brake or clutch systems?

Are the rear brakes drum or disc? If drum brake, they may need adjustment. If the brake shoes have worn down then you would eventually have excessive travel in the brake pedal.
