Replacing Floor Pans

Hi guys,

I'm getting ready to replace my W108's floor pans. I already received the new parts from MBCC and the car should be going in to the shop in early May. I'm really excited as my floor pans are in BAD SHAPE!

Naturally, the entire interior is coming out. They are going to remove the old pans, clean any surface rust, prep, etc. before welding the new pans.

Other than standard procedure, do you guys have any recommendations? Anything we should be looking for? Anything not to miss, treat, do, etc.?

As always, thanks in advance for your amazing advice!

Jose

Hi Jose,

When I am evaluating a car for repair, I try to work backwards before the symptomatic damage occurred. Did the windshield seal leak and flood the floor? Did the heater cores leak fluid under the carpet that was not visible? It would be disappointing to put in fresh metal and have the damage happen again.

If you are removing the door cards, check for rust and make sure the drain holes are clear and functioning. Dry window regulators fail and that can be prevented if you lubricate the window regulators with something like white lithium grease. When you put the door cards back on make sure the plastic sheeting is intact and seals so moisture doesn't damage the door cards.

Your car is absolutely GORGEOUS! It is worthy of the extra special attention and care you are providing. Rust is the enemy of these cars. Check all the systems that drain away water and keep out moisture. The trunk wheel wells are notorious for rusting.

Make absolutely sure that EVERYTHING attached to the underside of the pan is saved and reattached. Take photos of the underside before removing the old pan.
