I could really use some help with anyone with a 110 or 108 with A.C. please!

Hey guys,

I have a really nice 1968 280se which I bought from my godfather about ten years ago. The car is creme with brown interior and she is a sweet ride. A couple years back, I started smelling coolant so I added about 1/4 the prescribed amount of BarsLeaks to the radiator and that worked as a bandaid for three years or so, never smelling the coolant again until last fall. So I figured it was finally time to bite the bullet and go after removing and replacing the heater core. An arduous task to say the least. Knowing that this day was eventually going to happen, I purchased Frigidair controls for A.C. off ebay for a song that matched the interior of my car and figured I'd do the A.C. at the same time as the heater core.
So, we are going to use a modern compressor under the hood and keep the rest of the stuff frigidair. What I'm in dire need of are some pictures of how these units were installed under the dash above the passengers feet. There is the blower motor and the evaporator that sits up there. The fan I know is pushed all the way over and actually fits through the panel of the car. I'd be forever in debt if one of you that has this A.C. setup in their car could take some pictures so I can see where the evaporator is mounted and the blower motor at this point. I'll send whoever can do this for me a sixxer of some great brew from Burn'Em Brewery right down the street from my shop. Thanks guy!

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Can you post a photo of your AC unit?

The condenser is usually mounted in front of the radiator. The drier/condensor is usually mounted on the inside of the fender on the passenger side. Hoses from AC blower/controller go through the firewall to compressor. Do you have a bracket to mount your compressor? Do you have the correct pulley on your crank shaft and compressor?

When I want to see how mechanical stuff looks in other cars I often go to ebay where sellers post photos. I would gladly share photos of my cars to help you. Offering the ebay idea because it is fast.

The underdash units Mercedes used then just mounted the unit under the dash. It was just bolted up to the bottom of the dashboard.

The blower motor on these 108's was located in the kick panel on the passenger side. It was mounted in there and then, through a duct, blew air into the inside unit and out into the car.

These fit tightly but they do fit. Installing them is actually rather easy since they just fit in the hole and then bolt to the body work behind the kick panel.

And when you are sourcing what is known as the mounting kit make sure you get: The steel mount, all the bolts and spacers that come with the mount, the extra pulley for the A/C drive belt, the idler pulley for this belt, the water pump pulley with the extra pulley on it to fit the A/C belt and, last but not least, the fan spacer. Without this spacer your engine fan might be too close to the added pulleys.

Some 108 kits compensated for this spacer with the additional water pump pulley. Just take a look at how it is put together before it is removed from the donor and make sure you have everything.

And one last stupid question: Do you have a W110 or a W108? The underdash units are different and the fans are in different locations. If you have a W110 the inside unit and fan are one big unit where the A/C goes under the dash and the fan mounts behind the glove box.

But as far as the info on the compressor mount kit, well, that's all about the same.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the input and ideas. I have a W108. What I'm really trying to figure out is where exactly I need to put the evaporator under / behind the glove box. Can one of you please remove the underpanel and take some pics to show me where the evap fits exactly and how it mounts? Thank you so very much! Trying to get this beut back on the road before it gets too warm here in Indiana!

I have my w111 (1962) unit detached from the bottom of the dash, and the dash removed , if you think that pictures of my setup would help let me know

If you have your Catalog 'A' you can turn to pages 212 and 213 to see the typical underdash unit. On page 215 is the typical unit found in some early cars and the 600.

Pages 212 shows the fan in the wheel well and the A/C unit up under the dash somewhat up and behind the glove box. Page 213 shows how the duct work fits under the dash.

Page 215 shows a self contained unit that includes the fan and A/C unit mounted where the console mounts under the dash. Think of how the radio and hazard lighter are mounted in a 115; the self contained unit would replace that console.

I would send photos but I can't get them to load.

Hey, I don't have Catalog 'A'. If there is anyway you could upload pics, even if to another site or email me, I'd really appreciate it. My email is ringguy at gmail dot com. Thank you very much!!!
