That was another old timey shop that exists in ABQ - Lewis Brake and Clutch. I had them reline VW brake shoes many times. I also had several clutch discs for Toyota and MB relined by them for much less than buying new ones. They also do all the clutch/flywheel machine work including balancing for many of the local machine shops in town. They will also disassemble riveted pressure plates when needed and put them back together with fresh rivets.

Haven't tried yet to find the Salt Lake area equivalents . . .

What is this dial, scale thing at the base of the distributor? Looks like it has a movable pointer of some sort on it.

My guess is that it relates to adjusting the spark timing. You could loosen it up and experiment. Your pic shows the current setting. What could go wrong?

Thanks moon161, that's what I was thinking too. I've never seen an external method to advance/retard the spark before though.

I don't agree with the "what could go wrong?" statement though! You've never seen me work!

I rebuilt my rear drum brakes in 2010. The Classic Center quoted $250 per brake shoe and the car has four which is $1,000.00. The cost to reline at local clutch and brake shop was $17.50 each or $70.00 total plus tax.

Will that carb sync tool work on a 220S? It isn't quite 3" diameter while the PAITA carbs are oval and 3.5" on the long end.

The tool itself would work, but you'd have to come up with a way to fill the gaps. An adapter plate with a hole in the center would work, a hole large enough to clear the working opening in the bottom of the tool. You could make something out of plexi and adhere some felt or cork to it for a soft, sealing backing against the carb tops. And then attach this to the bottom of the tool?

Thanks for the info on the sync tool, I guess some stiff plasitc (plexi, like what was mentioned) with gasket material on each side could seal it.
I've been away from my computer for the last several days, a lot has happened. Thanks to all for the advice. I need to stop buying parts and start wrenching!

I remember reading that a Cool Whip container worked well as an adapter.

Now that you mention it, I remember reading that too. When I get it running I'll give it a try. Thanks Carpenterman.

According to my repair manual, this is to adjust slightly the timing to account for different octane gasolines. That makes sense. I guess you can learn a lot when you read the directions...

Others had mentioned changing the timing, thanks to them!

Flasher!

I got a hazard/turn signal flasher from an un-named parts house (pelican didn't carry it) and it has the blade style contacts. Catalog said it would fit but obviously not since my original has the round pole type contacts. (what should I expect for $2.19) Same number of contacts though, wondering if I can wire up an adapter of sorts and use this new flasher. Thoughts?

It's worth a try. Are the contacts labeled the same, or are there circuit diagrams on both that would allow proper match up?
