U-joint part number/availability

Car= 1971 280SEL.

Problem = Inside the rear axle, on the right hand side of the diff, the axle that swings turns inside a housing. Inside that housing is the axle itself and it is connected to the diff gears via a stub axle with a U-joint.

The entire rear end has to be torn down to get to this, but a friend is planning on doing all the bearings and what not during a winter rebuild. I suggest he change out this U-joint while he was in there.

But I can't find the part number or a source. Has anyone else run into this? Should I just take it to a driveshaft shop and let them figure it out?

Mercedes typically list the whole shaft with the UJ included - try looking for the bigger bit

That's what I have been running into. At one time this was available as a replacement part. Perhaps it no longer is.

At least the 108 'Catalog' shows this to be a part by itself.

Oh right - have you not got a part number then? Or are you just looking at a number on a picture thinking "drat I wish I had the part number list as well"...

PM Tomguy?

I can remember the days when I could order a part by calling the Dealer and saying, "This catalog, this page, this number," and the order would be placed.

But that was about twenty years ago.

Yeah well - to be fair there might be people working at the dealership who can do that for modern models but in twenty years the parts and the technology have changed quite a bit!
