Emergency Brake Cable Removal

Hey guys,

How do you remove the parking brake cable from the drum brake on a 1975 W115 240D? I'm trying to remove the rear subframe to repair some rust on the mounts. Can't seem to find anything on this forum or anywhere else. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Easiest route would be to remove the subframe with the cables attached to the hubs. Detach the cables from the "equalizer" and the body/brackets instead. Otherwise you have to pull the calipers and rotors so you can remove the parking brake shoes to get at where the cables connect inside the hub, according to the W115 chassis manual.

Yup. It has been some time since I changed out one of these 115 rear ends but I do remember I didn't detach the brake cables from the drums. I just adjusted some slack into the equalizer and slipped them out.

Don't let it get too slack, though. Just a bit more than is necessary to slip them out. This will make slipping them back in easier since the equalizer will be just about where you need it and won't be flopping about.

I don't know what the book time is on changing a rear end assembly but I recall it took about an hour to pull one out and put the other one in. But then I had a rather well equipped shop at the time and I was about 25 years younger.

Hey thanks for the help guys. I was able to loosen the tensioning bolt on the parking brake equilizer and slip the cables off. It had a square head but the 12mm socket seemed to work ok. I already have the springs and shocks removed and brake lines disconnected, and the exhaust removed so it should come out now. Thanks for the help.
