1979 300TD issues, recently purchased
Hello.
I joined this forum a few years ago, but this is my first post. I'm seeking some help and advice about a 1979 300TD wagon I purchased about a month ago. It sat for about a year and my mechanic has replaced the brake system and part of the vacuum pump. He says that everything is good, but my brakes are weird. When I stop, the pedal depresses as it should, but then becomes really hard to press. This is problematic in high traffic situations. He says the air might now be getting back into the pump fast enough for quick stops after you release the pedal a bit, but it's confusing to me because he says everything is good with the vacuum pump, the master cylinder, and they just replaced the brake pads, calipers. So, if my vacuum pump is good and the brake components are good then what? I just ran out of gas so now I'm aware the fuel gauge is misleading. I'm waiting on a tow back to the shop, and I hope the gas issue isn't a big thing. This is the oldest car I've owned and it sat for a while but I intend to use as a daily driver. I'm not a hipster or new the vehicles, I've owned two 300Ds, a 300SD, another 300TD, a couple 380SEs. I like the cars because they last forever if well maintained, they're sturdy, and they look great. Especially the Euro models which I used to own. I just started using the mechanic's services at the suggestion of my girlfriend and he seems pretty honest and knowledgeable along with his guys, but I no longer have a backup vehicle and I don't drive these cars for sport. If someone or anyone can give me some insight, on the brakes and even the gas thing (I just don't wanna be paranoid I've destroyed anything by continuing to attempt and start it after putting in two cans of gas and it loses power and cuts off), I'd really REALLY appreciate it. Well, the booster could be crap. I assume when you say you are putting gas into the car you are putting Diesel into the car...
If you run a diesel Mercedes out of fuel, you have to prime the injection pump. There is something under the hood that you actually have to pump to get the fuel as far as the injection pump. That could explain why you can't start the car after putting 2 cans of (hopefully diesel) into the tank. It definitely needs to be primed. I can't tell you how to do this since I've never done it and I don't have the owner's manual, but it's in the owner's manual or someone here will tell you the answer. As for the fuel gauge being wrong, it's time to clean it. On a wagon it's under the floor so you need to remove a floor panel to get to it. It has a giant 6 side fitting and it unscrews. It can be dismantled and cleaned. Fortunately it's diesel. The gas ones get all rusty and crapped out. |

I would ask your mechanic to check and see how much vacuum the vacuum pump is actually producing. It should produce between 16-21 inches of vacuum. If this is good, he should check for vacuum leaks. If none are found then I would suspect you have a faulty power brake booster.
As far as starting your car after running out of diesel fuel there is a hand operated primer pump near the injector pump that needs to be pushed up and down with your thumb several times (15-30 times) until the primer pump is hard to depress. This pump pulls the diesel fuel into the fuel injection system (much like priming a carburetor). If the engine will not start after using the primer pump you will need the help of your mechanic to bleed air out of the fuel injector lines. Last edited by BWhitmore; 10-20-2016 at 11:34 AM. |

Thanks, everybody. I really appreciate the responses and suggestions.
Since I posted, I've had the brake booster replaced and the fuel issue was just a primer thing. All the steering components have been replaced (mostly) so it's turning into a solid daily driver. Again, thanks for the help. Glad these forums exist and people actually use them for their intended purpose. |
