I thought I would post some pictures of the project I am finally starting. It is a true "barn find" with only 66, 000 documented miles. A 1966 250S with a bad engine. Rust free body in original paint, very nice MB tex interior. After disassembling the motor and finding a bad crank, I decided to upgrade to the Injected M110 motor and auto. trans from a low mileage 1978 280CE. Here are some pictures of the engine bay minus the original engine. I think I am going to Megasquirt the M110 since other members of the forum have had success.
I will be taking this project slowly but I would love to have your input.

Did you notice any change in power with the MS? What about fuel economy and driveability?

i'm planning a similar swap in my 63 220Sb. Its definitely getting a manual trans. planning a t-5 from a mustang but i have the four speed also. I'm driving a 83 or so 280se right now with a 4 speed manual, it is a great driving car, but not a big w126 style fan. My suggestion is do the manual if you can. its a little low on power below 3500 rpm but comes on like gang busters after, almost turbo like. And i really hope its a euro spec motor, us motors are way less powerfull. But it loooves to rev. pulls hard to 6000 plus. the manual make the car feel 500 pounds lighter at least. The euro spec 380se i also have driven with more power and an auto feels slower and way heavier.
As far as the swap it should bolt right in with the stock motor mount arms from the early block. the oil pan should fit but if not a 280sl or slc pan will. I could possibly sell one since i have a few m110 engines in parts cars.One thing you may want to look at is hood clearance. That m110 head is enormous. my w111 isnt going to be an issue i dont think but the w108 is definitely lower in the nose. the k-jet is ok but im sure there is power and a lot of mileage to be gained from a tuned mega squirt or haltec efi system. Plus you could turbo charge it:D. Ill be watching this. good luck!

Please keep me posted on your manual transmission swap....I think I have plenty of room under the hood of the 108 for the M110. I have had the Euro spec M110 in a 126 and I really liked how well that motor worked even with the big 126 chassis. I have never owned a manual transmission Mercedes...sounds fun!

The 240 and 300d diesel and early single cam 6 cylinder engines share the same rear trans adapter plate so all the transmissions will bolt up. Ratios are different in some though. You need a neutral balance flywheel from a m110 or m130 2.8 litre. I know 2.2 and 2.3 are balanced individually with the crank. Not certain about the 2.5 motor. I remember reading somewhere that you can use the diesel flywheel on a gas engine but I have doubts about that. The shifters are pretty universal through the years and your car should have the spot on the floor to bolt it to. You will have to fine w108 floor shift rods(good luck) or just modify some from another chassis, plus pedals. I am looking for some w108 clutch pedals also to see if I can duplicate them also. W111 late model v8 coupe (unobtainium) may work also but w111/110 sedans with the 4 and 6 cylinder are not the same at all.

You could possibly use a four speed and column shift from a 6 cylinder w111 by transplanting the whole column assembly and transmission but I've never done it so I won't guarantee that. That early style rounded bellhousing from the w111 is the key to my t5 swap plan so I won't sell either of mine.

The oil cooler (heat exchanger) on a 250S is located under the left engine support arm. On a 280S it's part of the radiator. You will want to safe the oil cooler from the 250S unless you are putting in an engine that has an oil cooler integrated into the block.

I have a 1970 280SE with a rebuilt engine. The car is a rust bucket. I bought it to part out on another project but I think I've lot steam so will probably sell the car as a really expensive parts car.

This may be another 5 speed option for a m110 or other early six cylinder.

I'm trying to find shifter measurements to see where it would come up. The om617 shares flywheel bolt pattern with a m110 so it should all bolt up with the Jeep flywheel. Custom driveshaft will be needed and a 2wd ax15. The gearing is pretty close to original m110 if you run a 3.69 rear end with it.

My late friend dropped a Euro M110 in a 111 sedan chassis. There were a few things, such as moving the battery tray from the left side to the right side; swapping out the brake booster and modifying the parking brake pivot in order to gain clearance for everything. He used a 4-speed manual tranny from another 111 parts car. Everything bolted together and he used a 108 floor shifter with shortened shift rods. The rear axle was from a 4.5 108 chassis and had a 3.23:1 ratio. Of course he had to add the electric fuel pump, custom make power steering hoses & fuel lines, install a custom exhaust and use 14 inch wheels to clear the rear calipers.

An article was written for the STAR magazine as if his son built the car, but I know better (as well as other folks). If you have or can get your hands on a copy of the January/February 2010 of the STAR, look under 'Star Struck' for the write up and pictures of the finished product.

I purchased the Mercedes from my friend before he passed in 2013. The car had been sitting and needed some maintenance, tweaking and TLC in order to make it road worthy again. With a few more modifications, I brought the car to the 'next level' - starting better, running smoother, etc. It still looks as good as in the pictures even after traveling almost 11,000 miles.

With the under hood space being just about equal to the 111 chassis, I do not think you will have any problems transplanting the M110 in your 108 chassis. The CIS M110 has plenty of power and the setup in the 220S I described delivers over 20+MPG. That is of course if I control my right foot, as this is a FUN car to drive.
