BARN FIND! Untouched original 1972 Mercedes Benz 280SE

Ran across this in local CL. Have no affiliation and not into this genre of MB. Thought maybe of interest to someone

Yeah, Air up the tires, put in fresh gas and drive away.
What could possibly go wrong?

hmmm, I'd look at it if I was close. But 5k ...no, not even close to what I would offer.

It would however be fun to see where it ends up

Same here Ron. It would be a great project, but just to clean up the fuel system, buy new tires, replace all rubber, replace or restore interior, change all fluids, check disks/replace pads' restore exterior finish would take a lot of work and $$$. What would it be worth if brought back to say a 3 out of 5 condition? As is, it is not worth much. Maybe $1-$1.5k for someone who can do all the work themselves (and likes D-Jets )?

See my latest on dumping my Djet system and going to fit carbs.
Good system when it's perfect but when it starts going wrong its up there with the desciption of a boat, ie a hole in the water you throw money into every month.
😆

That car is not a d-jet. It's the early mechanical diesel-style injection that was used up until d-jets were introduced in the m110, m116, and m117. The m130 and all m180 family engines used the early mechanical injection. Apparently those injection pumps are a $1500+ expense when not working correctly. The zenith and soled carbs weren't any better or worse apparently. Supposedly either in good condition is good, and either in bad condition is bad. D-jets are apparently megasquirt-friendly, but I have yet to run into one that cost very much to get running right. Parts may be expensive new, but plenty of good running d-jets are still being parted.

Anyway, that car isn't a d-jet.

I work on these cars now and then. This is not a D-Jet system, it is a mechanical Fuel Injection system.

The radio is missing but the seats look nice.

This would have to be an early 1972. Most 1972 titled cars have the 4.5 V-8, but Mercedes had a habit then of titling cars in the year they were first sold and not when they were produced.

For me any of these MFI SE's that have been sitting for more than three years is a parts car. This is because the injection pump will likely need rebuilding. Have you priced one of those lately?

But these are nice when they are sorted out. The six seems smoother to me than the V-8. You do have the mechanical FI to fool with you don't have the trigger points to worry about.

At a grand, you could probably break close to even by parting it out if you gave up on the restore, that said and as Graham mentioned what you would have to put into it , you would never recoup.
I know of two barns that have close to 15-18 MB gas and diesel cars from the late 70's to 80's an eccentric who drove each of them for some period of time, parked them and never looked back. I have my eyes on them , but I fear these too may be too far gone by the time they come to market ( if they ever do) These are all lined up just sinking into the dirt floor
I often wonder just how cars of this caliber end up like the one in this post...crazy

I never understand the "glory" of a barn find. It means that a car has been sitting for many years with bad gas in it, possibly exposed to some moisture. The pics of this car look awful. You can see that the chrome on the gear selector has spots of rust all over it. If you want a good deal on a W108, look on CL in California, Arizona, etc. There are plenty of drivers at that price point.

A "Barn Find" is only a barn find once. As said So Cal is much more hospitable than most barns.

Sold the Mercedes today for my asking price of $5000. It was mint condition under all the dust just as I suspected.
Thanks again for the help!
