A/C Question
Is it possable to put a/c on a '72 220 Gas [115 body]? Was it an option at the time, so it could work out to be just a bolt on? Or would i have to change a lot of parts to get it to work? Also, if i could do it, is there a conversion kit to make it epa safe?
Thanks Joe |

AC was an option on '72 115 cars. In fact, all of the '72 114 and 115 cars I've seen had AC. It's a 'bolt on' but there's alot of stuff to install. If you're determined to put AC in your 220 you should look for a similar parts car to get all you will need.
The AC compressor and bracket on 4 cylinder cars is a special pain to install as it fastens to the motor mount pad on the engine block as well as the waterpump. Inside the dash console, the AC box with AC blower attaches to the heater after removing a blank-off plate. Then the AC thermostat, vacuum actuator, fan change-over switch and wiring. AC hoses and condenser with auxiliary fan. If you wind up installing a used system from a parts car, you will need a NEW filter/drier, probably some NEW AC hoses and NEW front compressor seal kit. possibly a NEW compressor clutch pulley bearing and a NEW belt tensioner pulley. then whatever else may be needed on a 30+ year old system. The old freon is still legal but expensive. Some have converted older ACs to the new R134 freon wth mixed results. I'd expect about 20% less cooling without modifying other parts of the old AC system. Happy Motoring, Mark
