My '66 Fintail 200D Update

Time flies/flys. I posted last about a year ago. This is what I've done so far trying to get the car roadworthy.

Replaced rear wheel cylinders
Replaced front calipers and pads
Replaced master cylinder
Added new style glow plugs
Found two nice front signal housings in Canada for $65 total
Right rear tail light lens from Germany for $150 total
Left rear tail light lens from Istanbul for $50 total
New battery

My friend helped me bleed the front calipers the other day and after a test drive we believe the booster is bad due to a very hard pedal. Does anyone know if they can be rebuilt? Can it be removed without taking off the master brake lines? I can't find hide nor hair of one anywhere on the internet. The engine fires right up and it is fun to drive it around the neighborhood. We felt like diplomats with the Mercedes symbol on the hood shining in the sun. It ain't pretty, but it does turn some heads. I will be adding a collector's plate soon. Thanks for any help.

If the 66 has a belt driven vacuum pump like the later diesels, it supplies vacuum to brake booster. Check to see if it's all there and working.

Thanks. Mine has the vacuum pump on the front of the engine. I'm going to do a test on it tomorrow. Hopefully, it'll give a good reading.

Thanks, meltedpanda. I really don't know the model, but any info would help.

I just tested the vacuum pump and it shows a steady 19 lbs. It's the booster.

Would you be able to post a photo of your brake booster? I wonder if it is the same 'pancake' style as the one in my 1968 Heckflosse.

I will take some pics tomorrow. I know it's not a pancake style. Thanks.

One quick thing I noticed - the third picture shows the vacuum line for the brake booster being disconnected. Did you disconnect it intentionally for your photos or testing purposes?

If the booster is indeed bad (not a vacuum line issue), you might be able to stick a W108 brake booster in there if a 110 unit cannot be found.

Count yourself fortunate. You do not have the older T50 style. You should be able to find a replacement without much trouble. New used or even after market might fit You have the room it looks like to use several style boosters that should work

I removed the line to check the vacuum pump.

That's what I was thinking, a different model maybe. I may also see if a brake shop may be able to just rebuild it. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks again.

You didn't mention changing the brake hoses at each wheel. Over time the inside diameter gets smaller and will prevent pressure from getting to the wheels and can cause a hard pedal. New hoses are inexpensive and easy to change. I think I would change the hoses if you haven't already. It may solve your problem, and they should be changed every 10 years or so. The manufacture date is printed on the hoses.
