Electric windows and sunroof questions w108
I took my 4.5 on the first ride of the season last night. It ran great, but I noticed two relatively minor issues I wanted to ask about:
1. The sunroof will not close perfectly flat. When closed, the front driver-side corner of sunroof is "dipping down" a bit and is not completely even with rest of car. If retract the roof a smidgen it will appear more even but still not perfect. How do I address this issue, not even sure how to access the sunroof assembly on a w108? 2. Some of my electric windows seem to operate slow, particularly the rear passenger one which moves at a snail's pace. It will sometime stop advancing with the button pressed down and only restart if I release and depress button a couple more times. Any suggestions/ideas on these two issues? One thing to consider is "lubrication." The original lubricants on both of these mechanisms has turns to a restrictive goo by this time. Some part of the window mechanism may even have been bent by the drive motor continually fighting this resistance. Both mechanisms need to be thoroughly cleaned, inspected (especially the window mechanism) for damaged/misalligned parts, and relubricated.

I run into these slow running windows now and then. Everyone does.
The only cure I have found is to remove the door card, lower the window to about 50% down, and lube up any moving part or pivot. The place that most people miss is the channel that the nylon guide runs in. It is at the bottom of the window glass and you can't see it because it faces into the door. But you can feel it. Just run some grease in the track with your finger. I use Mobil One wheel bearing grease. It works great for sliding surfaces. And for the joints and/or pivots use any spray lube. Don't use WD-40. It is quite a job but if you really want to lube it up you can remove the motor and then open the case on the gear box. You will find the grease in there dried up as well. Just throw in some grease. There is no need to pull the gear out. Before pulling the motor you should lube up everything and then run it up and down a time or two. If you are happy with the speed then you are good to go. Adjusting the sunroof is a rather big deal. I am sure you can do it but you will need a manual with the instructions in it before you start. |

OK, thanks guys. I will try to lubricate window mechanism.
As for sunroof, how would I access the cables/motor? I wil look for a manual. |
