Door Lock Inop

After having my w123 repainted, I am unable to lock / unlock the driver door with the key from outside. When turning the key, it feels like the door handle shaft touches something but without engaging anything even though the lock mechanism in the handle works perfectly. The door lock works OK from inside and the vacumm system works as well.

Before removing the inside door panel, does anyone have any thoughts?

From what I remember I had the same problem on my '81 300SD. Had to remove the door card and then saw that a slider (goes north to south) had stopped working. As I remember I just had to push it back into a ring or circle (something like that) so that it continued to move that mechanism. It had just backed out.

Sorry to be so vague. If I can find my very old posts about it, will let you know.

Not sure that this is your problem but possible.

Found it (should have taken a doggone picture):

"Now the key will lock and unlock the door - 81 300SD
For about a year now my key would lock the doors but would not unlock the drivers side; I had to unlock the passenger side door and climb across the front seat to unlock the driver's door. Pretty embarassing.

Thought it was the tumblers in the door lock so I removed the lock this weekend. Took it to a locksmith; he turned the key back and forth in the lockset and said there was nothing wrong with the tumblers and that the lockset was working fine. Headed back home.

Finally saw that the unlocking mechanism is a plastic piece which goes through a hole in a metal flange; when you turn the key, the plastic pulls the flange and the door unlocks. Over the years the plastic had worn down some and it slipped out of the hole. I just bent the flange back a little and reinserted the plastic in the hole and it works again. Cost - zero."

In that case I'll have a look with the panel off. The body shop guys had to stick their fingers inside the door through the handle access on the outside of the door to unlatch it as the handles were off. They must have dislodged something. I'm doing the same thing you had to do - entering the pax side and reaching over to unlock the system, ha ha.
