Key - Backup

I have a 1981, 240d Mercedes Benz and need to get a second key. My local MB dealer said that MB has stopped making a key for that model/Year. Can any one provide source that could help?

Note: I contacted an after Market source and they could not help-said key was coded!

Help

Jim

Any locksmith shop can make keys for you if they have the blanks. There is nothing special about them. I had four made recently for my 1983.

And your dealer is lying to you. They are probably too lazy and disrespectful to assist someone driving a lowly 1981 240d. It's disgusting that they don't know that MB makes keys in Texas and mails them to dealers around the country if you simply provide your VIN and proof of ownership. Please contact the MB classic center in Irvine, CA, and they should be able to help you. Then once you do that, go back to your dealer and tell them that you will buy all your parts online from now on.

I went to a local locksmith, and he made me spare keys for my 72 SL and 85 300D. They have catalogs from several suppliers of key blanks that include the Benz blanks. Our locksmith actually had both blanks in stock (he has been around for a long time!). He then just copied my keys.

Problem may be when you don't have any keys. Then they would need codes. Some dealers used to have key making machines.

Thanks for the replys. I just went my non local MB dealer today which was about a 40 minute drive and the parts guy when to his computer and ordered a backup key for twenty dollars with no problem. No sure why my local dealer said that the key was no longer available! Provided my title and id and was told that the key will be in two days!

Its just for the reason stated by the other member lazy. Its a lot of work for a $20 sale. They have to photocopy registration and ID, scan and retain. My dealer also requires me to bring the vehicle in so they can make sure the key works (Thinking this is just another security protocol). Its not a big deal except when I have obtained a car without keys and have to trailer it in. Gets a lot of looks when I drive the hoopie F250 with a trailer under their granite paved service area. LOL

Many of the O'Reilly's or other non-specialty auto parts stores use key blanks made for a company called AXXESS. Key blank #41 in their series fits many many W123 models.

I also found out that this application is the same for 1980s series Buicks, but don't have a Buick to try it out on.

They are all made in China now, anyway.

The non-local MB dealer called yesterday and said that my key was in and ready to be picked up. Stopped by this morning and got my back up key. Immediately went to my local MB dealer with key and receipt and asked for parts manager as to why I was told by his parts person that MB could no longer make this key when the MB dealer in the county could and did with no problem. He have no reason except that parts person made an error and will be so informed. He apologized and gave me a discount on a MB car mug or MB key chain; I got the mug!

He should've given you the mug for free!

So you got taken twice. Once for the dealer's complete failure in the service arena and secondly for paying for a piece of M-B advertising.

Agreed

Call Eddie Ovando, parts mgr at MB of St Clair Shores,MI on the 1-877 number. Send him proof of ownership, he will send you what you need. I just sent him a request for two keys for an 82 240D.
I know they'll be ready next week at a reasonable price.
