Roadtrip! Orinda, CA to Chicago- Day 1 - video

Hey there, everyone...

I just posted a time-lapse video, set to a great open road tune by Jonathan Wilson, of Day 1 of our journey from San Francisco to Chicago.

The goal of the trip is to pick up a 'new' leather interior and euro bumpers for my '78 280ce, which is running fine and cool, easily climbing over the 6-7000' mountain passes. It's increasingly clear to me that this is what the 280ce was built to do...

Wish us luck as we have about 4000 miles remaining! Here's a link to the video album which, as of this message, includes day 1, which got us to Salt Lake City.

https://vimeo.com/album/4783403

Enjoy the trip and the tune, and feel free to share...

Great video. Well picked tune to go with it. Please also share any stats along the way like miles traveled, avg. speed, mpg and time.
My experience with MB is that the more they are driven the better they drive.

OMG! That opening sequence of you guys talking in the dark with the car parked on the side of the road totally reminded me of the movie Nocturnal Animals, which features a brown W123!!!

Awesome!
If you are looking for stops along the way, Omaha has great restaurants in the area we call “The Old Market”. It is 3minutes North of I-80 at the 13th street exit. Next best stop..........Des Moines.

Hi Everyone...

The trip has gone great! We're currently in Gillette, WY, heading west to spend the day in Yellowstone before heading back south towards the Bay Area. Car has been running wonderfully. The only "issue" thus far has been a loose wire for the radio.

Oil consumption has been ¼ quart (yes, that's .25) over the last approximately 4000 miles, with sustained speeds between 75-80mph most of the way.

I have posted several other days' videos, and won't get to publishing yesterday until I can get to a faster internet connection..

One thing I know for certain though is this; the 280ce was purpose-built for exactly what I'm doing with it on this trip. It just wants to GO!

Hey Everyone...

Trip continues to go very well! We're now in central Nevada, and will be back home tomorrow (Sunday). We've logged nearly 5000 miles in a week, and the 280ce just keeps running better and better, save for an emerging cold-start issue, which I'll address next week. The car has averaged 16mpg so far, with cruising speeds on the interstates at or near the posted limit, generally 75 or 80mph out in these parts.

Yesterday, we climbed over a 9,666' mountain pass, followed by a snow-covered 8700' pass entering Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. While a bit down on power, the m110 just pressed on.. and on... It even handled the 85 octane fuel available in North Dakota pretty well.

Day 5's video just posted (sorry, we've been without a good enough internet connection to upload these past few days). More to come!

Is that a GoPro capture or are you using a digi cam with shutter interval?

Hi Josh - yes, it's a GoPro Hero4 mounted in a specially-modified case that allows for a waterproof USB power connection. Camera is mounted at the top of the windscreen, with the wire tucked under the rack faring, and routed down the rain channel on the A-pillar into the engine compartment, where I have a waterproof 12v power adaptor to plug in to. 3 x 64GB microSD cards recorded 1080p at 24fps in "super wide" mode, and I offloaded each card as they filled up to a portable HDD on my laptop.

The benefit of doing full-frame video instead of image sequences is you have greater control over how much you speed things up, and if something cool (or uncool) happens, you've got it all.

In Final Cut Pro X, I just import the footage, and compress it for time. To be fair, I'm a filmmaker, so this stuff is 1st nature to me, but it works. Did the same thing in 2011 for a x-country burn in my '72 Porsche 914...
