240D fan clutch
G'day.
A few moths ago I bought a nice 1978 240D, 4 speed, no A/C. This car does not have a fan clutch on it. I'm told that one will make a difference in performance and that it originally had one. I think the reason it does not have one is the previous owner replaced the water pump at some point and it was different than stock. What do I need to do to correct this? Fan clutch, pulleys, etc. Thanks. |

I believe all you need is a fan clutch and the fan that attaches to it. The fan/clutch assembly simply replaces the one-piece non-clutched fan you currently have. I did this swap to the engine in a W115 240D and it worked fine.
EDIT: You'd also need to replace the bolts that hold the clutch-less fan to the water pump with the studs and nuts used to attach the clutch.

I would be very surprised if you could notice the difference in vehicle performance between a clutched and non-clutched fan in a 240D.
I went the other direction (clutched 220D fan to non-clutched fan) and could not tell a difference. I did this swap because fan clutch had failed and the fan just freewheeled. Because my clutched fan had failed, I have better cooling with a non-clutched fan.

My '74 still has its original solid non-clutched fan. I like the sound of it as I wind up the engine through the gears.
