Opinions on 1977 450SLC

I finally sold my 280E and now I have the bug again. I have always wanted an SL but realize I could probably never afford to buy one. I came across this ad for a 450SLC and was wondering what people on this forum think of that model.

Here is the link:

Let me know what you think. I am down to only three cars now.

They are great cars, but their problem is that they cost as much to fix as the SL's, but without any upside potential.

Though not discussed much, there's been some good threads on the SLC over the past year or so. Try searching with just "SLC" and you should get some good results.

Can't beat the price, a nice one can be found f/$5000 or so. The 500SLC (5.0 V8) is certainly intriguing as well...

If you're looking at it from a "good return for your investment" standpoint, it's probably not the best M.B. to buy. But I've always thought they were cool as hell. They have a mystery, a " No, you can't look at me today" attitude about them. Big, long coupes have always been kind of unpractical, look at 2 door town cars or coupe devilles. Your accountant would'nt understand, but Marvin Gaye would.

I like 'um...

First things first...they're not economical. Now that that's said, I have a 1980, and it probably looks exactly like the one you're considering. In my opinion, because they're long and low, they're beautiful to look at. They handle well, and will go as fast as it is legally permissible. I just took mine on a 300 mile trip last weekend, and with the windows down and the sunroof open, I had a great day in the Hawaiian sunshine!

Aloha,

Hey Ted- - doesn't that Olds of yours have the front wheel drive 455 cid motor stock??? Must be fun to rip front wheel drive burnouts!!!

I've got a 400cid 2bbl w/ like 160hp (400 lbs of torque) in a 6000lb Continental!

Hey -fad,

Yep! -- it's a "GT" so it has the same (massive valve) heads, cam and distributor as the 442, plus a higher stall on the torque converter. Oh yeah, and it has a bullet proof bottom end with the forged crank. Good for 510 ft/lbs of torque. It'll lay a looooong strip and always freaks out the pony car kids. I've heard stories of yahoos modding them a bit, so they can rip off the front tires.

Your Lincoln has fallen subject to emissions ): -- but if you wanted to "untap" that 400, it wouldn't take a lot.
