Does your current water pump function? They typically last a very long time. I would recommend against replacing it unless it seizes or leaks (if the leak isn't coming out of the inexpensive gasket between the pump and the engine block).

The only way to get the correct water pump, or really any part, for your car is to list the VIN. When you go to the Mercedes dealer they don't care what year it is or what type. The VIN tells them what they want to know.

And there is a good reason for this. During those years Mercedes, as well as some other German brands, didn't hew to the year model as close as American cars did. A 1967 that didn't sell by Dec. 31, 1967 would suddenly become, on Jan. 1, 1968, a 1968 model.

The FTC finally put a stop to this sometime in the early 70's. I don't think any actual laws were broken and this was just the German way of dating cars.

So the VIN is all important. Mercedes, BMW, VW ann Auto Union all made running changes throughout the years thus making the year model of the car not a useful way to determine which parts are correct.

And for a water pump you might find the dealer is a good place to check. They are usually competitive in price on normal wear items.

i got this lecture the first time I went to a dealer to buy a part. This was long ago and the local auto parts place just said the dreaded words: Dealer Only.

So to the dealer I went where I ran into this VIN thing.

But beware. A lot of dealers today, while they can get these parts, hate to mess with them. Still, with the internet it is far easier to track down a part and there is nothing anymore that is dealer only.

I always check with Pelican before buying anything. They provide this forum so the least I can do is provide them with some income.

The MB Classic Centre in Irvine CA is a good source for parts.
