W114 280 efi conversion

Have been planing this for some time. Decided to replace the carb on my M110 engined with a FiTech go street 400 efi unit. After a first abortive attempt finally got it all done this week. The fuel tank was found to be super rusty and as a replacement is hard to source in hk the tank was split open ,cleaned , zinc coated , welded back and painted. The intake manifold was machined to make the fitting simpler and allow for the stock filter to be used if desired.
A high pressure in line pump and filter added at the back. I chose to use an Edelbrock air filter for now as it keeps the lovely engine visible.

The car starts and drives really well and the engine sounds great. No doubt still a lot of tweaking ahead but very happy with the results.

Hey Mike ,
Your tbi installs were the inspiration for pushing ahead with this. Thanks for sharing.

What? So now it's MY fault?:D:D

The Fitech set-up looks much nicer than my cobbled together unit.

What are you using for ignition control? Pertronix?

Fault is a strong word but yes. It probably also cost considerably more.

The FiTech is a nice unit and seems natural route to efi from a solex.

Yes I am running Pertronix. The shop here that failed to install the FiTech installed the Pertronix.

The shop that succeeded discovered the magnet was installed at a random location and the car was running with 25deg advance at idle.

Lucky I didn’t blow a hole in anything.

Oh I don't know.

$400.00USD for the MSII controller
$70.00 for the (NARROW band) O2 set-up
$70.00 for the wiring loom
$100 for the used TBI unit, injectors and adapter
$125.00 for the fuel pump and filter
$40.00 for the temp sensors (fuel and air)

$805.00 plus untold hours of fussing about with fiddly bits.

The FiTech is near 800 for everything including a wide band sensor and a small touch screen controller but excluding the fuel pump and filters. Not a lot of fussing required.

I think that’s a great deal.

Yup, I agree. The FiTech system would be the way to go for ease of use, lack of fussing about and simplicity. I wish it had been available when I was converting my M110.

The only advantage I see to using the MSII is the fact I can use its added capabilities to control ignition using a trigger wheel (see my M115 conversion).

Unless you are wanting to convert to spark control using wasted spark or COIP then the FiTech is definitely the way to go.

One tip for anyone wishing to go the FiTech route, use a true Pertronix unit. I used another type of unit at first (HotSpark) and while it worked fine for points replacement it was too "noisy" (EMI) for the electronic controller.

That's awesome! Great job.
Now you got me thinking.

What are you thinking ?
BTW the default settings on the fitech needed a fair amount of tweaking as they are for much larger engines. Let me know if you would like the know where we ended up. The car now runs really well.

FiTech just released a smaller two barrel efi kit. Same as the kit I fitted but better choice for smaller Mercedes engine. Doing the conversion today I would go for this one - the 4 barrel, while can be made to work well, is too large for the engine size
