Euro 600 at california boneyard 4 speed.
Euro 1972 w116 600 "SEL". I think with four speed manual at Windsor California Pick and pull. Shifter, pedals and the four speed transmission are still there, with the engine. A nice euro rear bumper and a front with flaking chrome available. Sorry, I cannot pick for people. No time. most other euro goodies gone. The climate control is there. It seems there is some valuable stuff, I would grab but no time or space. Ill get pics though if someone needs.

There was no 450SEL 6.9 in 1972, either. Who knows what car this is... too funny. It reminds me of the "600SE" I found once in a wrecking yard. I grabbed the trunk emblem. It turns out Chrysler copied Mercedes badges for their cars. If it's an actual 600 in the yard, someone should buy the whole car as they go for tens of thousands in rough condition.

It was listed as a 600 by the yard, maybe it means 600 series. So maybe a 6.9. It had no badge. I looked at the vin and def. a 116. euro import sticker still in place. All I know is the engine was big. larger than a 350 for sure with a 4 speed. If/when I go back Ill get the vin. The manual transmission setup looked factory.

The W116 apparently was introduced in Sep. 1972 as a 1973 MY car. A 3.5 M116 was one of the first engines introduced, and presumably could be had with a manual trans outside the US. It would be remarkable to find an M100 (6.3) installed in that chassis, and even more remarkable to find a manual trans behind an M100. Could an M100 have been installed aftermarket? AMG mischief?

The 6.9 didn't come out until 1975, and not even in the USA until 1977. It sounds like they have no idea what they have, but it sounds like it's probably a very early production 350SEL or 450SEL. It probably has the brass coolant expansion tank. Manual transmissions were available outside the USA, but as far as I know, never available on the 6.9. It sounds like an adventure, anyway.

I would also check for a limited slip diff. I know all the 6.9's had them but I also know you could special order one on any 116.
It should have a small tag hanging down saying 'use special oil' but in German. You might grab the wood, too. That looks rather special for a 116. Or maybe I have just never seen wood in that good of condition. And the 116's could be ordered with a pre-heater for the engine. This would sit behind the headlight on the left side and look like a box with a spark plug and lots and lots of hoses. Very rare. This was a $7,000 option in the day. It was set to come on by a clock like device in the glove box. It is also gas fired and made by Webasto. Carpets are very likely actual wool. As is the trunk carpet. And check the trunk and back seat for a fridge. I have only seen one of these so they are quite uncommon. But if you had the cash Mercedes would fix you right up! A lot of these high dollar gizmos were a tax dodge. German tax law would tax your income but not your perks. So an executive might get a dolled out car provided by the company to drive in place of a pay raise. |

It seemed to be deleted. No holes as far as I could tell. It was hot out so I did not look too closely. I'm thinking its a regular 3.50 and my image in my head was construed. Now I may go out for some odds and ends today so I'll check. I might like to know where the engine digits are just in case. i doubt ill find them its a dirty mess. I'll get the vin though.
