Change Those Filters!

Just a note to my fellow old Mercedes owners: Change your filters and fluids. Especially if you don't know the vehicles history. I removed a 1/2" of what appeared to be beach sand (the car came from Savannah, Ga.) from my fuel filter housing. Beneath the sand was an 1/8" or more of hardened varnish. The filter looked original, 37 years old. I hope I'm not insulting any ones intelligence, but I'm surprised the old coupe ran as well as it did.

Clunker,

Can you direct me to boneyard in your world? I'm within an hour and a half of Atlanta and need a place to scavenge.

I don't know if they're still in business, but I used to go to Smyrna right off of Atlanta road (basically Marietta not far from Cobb Galleria erea) at a huge MB yard called EMBEE (that's how it was spelled) and got all kinds of parts for my 115's but they had all kind of MB's in the yard and I'd just walk out on the yard and get what I needed for decent prices. You might try 411 and see if they're still listed.
I'll look and see if I still have their number somewhere in my old phone book. Hopes this helps!

Good luck

Alan

Thanx Alan,

I'm up I-75 anyway so the north end makes it even better. I wasn't successful with directory assistance, online or in-person. If/when you come across their number, I would appreciate it.

Thanx again,

Looks like it may be a dead end...I tried their # (was 770-434-5686) but was disconnected. I had no luck with 411 either but you may be able to see if perhaps they have another number for their addy which WAS 4000 Lee Rd S.E. in Smyrna. Maybe they have another yard somewhere if they've closed (I hope they just moved!)

I'm thinking that unfortunately, there weren't a lot of takers of MB parts in that area and they probably shut down. I used to love going over there about 2 years ago and chatting with the guys and they'd really let you just go for broke looking for whatever part you wanted off of whatever car. They really didn't have SET prices and although they knew what they COULD charge for some things, they'd bargain with you which was soooo cool.

That in itself probably killed them in that area because every time I went there, there was anything but a long line of folks trying to get parts there although they always had 3-5 guys there on hand to help the owner with parts, etc. Was pretty much a mom and pop operation with the office in a huge "barn" like structure with a black and white TV and coffee maker on a table and old magazines and some pups (they were pups THEN) everyone played with! Man, I'm starting to tear up a little...
OH well, I'll keep looking around for ya

Alan
