250CE for €2500, bubbling paint

Hello there tech people,

I haven't been posting or responding much because I; 1. Don't have a merc yet, 2. Don't know enough anyway. I'm looking for a 250/280CE W114 and as it happens one has appeared for 2500 euro(which is very similar to 2500 dollars at the moment). The trouble is the owner says it needs bodywork. When quizzed he said the paint is bubbling in places and a respray should sort this out. It has been garaged since '88, and the car is running fine apart from this paint issue. Having not viewed the car yet, I don't know the extent of the bubbling. From doing a search I know that this means rust is either there, or on the way. My question is, how do I know when to draw the line. How much is a reasonable amount to accept, (the car is quite cheap for these lands). I don't mind getting a bit of body work done, and I was going to get a respray anyway.

Thanks.

Ronán.

It depends on on where the "bubbling" is. If it around the headlight rims, or body surface caused by a neglected stone chip, then those are easily fixed. If it is at the bottom of the doors, around the wheel arches, or in the sills under the doors, then it is more serious and will take a major effort to fix it right. Most of the bubbling I have seen comes from re-rusting of poor repairs and this is very bad news.

Many times these cars have problems because the seals around the glass and trunk leak and allow water into the interior causing the floors to rust. This can be fixed, but it is expensive.

If the car has serious rust problems, keep looking.

Thanks chuck,

I'll have a good look in all those hidden and hard to repair areas. He mentioned that there was some of these bubbles on the sills, so I am already thinking of not taking him up on this offer. we'll wait and see.

The only bubbling that I know of is rust cancer. It creaps under the paint until it reaches the surface creating a bubble. Just like cancer it is hard to cure and almost always requires the effected part to be cut out or replaced. No overspray will help this condition.

To see the value of your possible acquisition go to http://www.vmrintl.com/cctm/cctmenus/mbyri.htm

In any case, make an offer around 35% below asking price.
But then again......
I got mine at 50% of asking price.

good luck

Guys,

Last night I went to have my second look at the 250CE, with some mates; a mechanic, a driver, and a body work guy, the mechanic said yes, the driver didn't say anything, and the body work guy said NO. We had the car up on a ramp, and it's there that we noticed quite a few patched up holes in the floor. There was also cosmetic stuff on the hood, trunk etc. He quoted me somewhere near €5/6000, so I hot footed out of there, head held high. I'm real glad I passed the initial test of buying a classic, DON'T BUY THE FIRST ONE! I didn't want to be annoying ye all with the same first timer questions, hence the update now. I probably would have thrown the loot over the counter had I not used this forum for advice prior to inspection. So thanks again, and I can't wait for the next one to be uncovered from the back of someone's garage.

Think you made a sound decision in taking along some mates to check out the car with you. Once the body starts to bubble with rust it is a good indicator that rust is prevalent elsewhere. The floor pans are a big issue with rust. Always check them out unless you want to use the “Flintstone Overdrive”.

Good luck in your search.
