right rear wheel bearing / 1966 W108
To replace the right rear wheel bearing on a 1966 W108 250S does the axle need to be raised up above horizontal? If so, why?
The following parts seem to be in the way and/or need removal to get to both wheel bearings: shocks (2) springs (3) including compensating spring brake calipers Why is the right side rear bearing harder to remove than the left side? I was quoted 16 hours to do this job. I was surprised to hear that. The car is on the lift but not disabled yet, so if this is way off, let me know soon! Or if this sounds about right let me know too. Jeff

According to Chiltons, the rear axles pull out after you remove the caliper, rotor, parking brake shoes, backing plate, dust cover, and retainer. Just like an american live axle. The bearing is then removed using a puller.
I don't believe you have to remove the housings or diff, you can leave all that in place. 16 hours seems way too high, unless you are not talking about the outer bearing? Peter

I pulled the car out of that shop because I
suspected there were some shady dealings going on. I also contacted my regular mechanic and he said it was impossible for this job to take more than 4-5 hours. He also said the book rate was 4.5 hours which means an experienced mechanic would take less (actual) time. The point being the job would take no where near 16 hours. The first shop also indicated that they would be willing to sell me the parts they had ordered for the job for $200. I passed on the offer and I ordered the parts myself (from the same vendor) for $60 plus shipping. All I need is a spring compressor and I might entertain doing this job myself. Thanks for your response. Jeff
