Transmission Question.

Hello.

My 1972 mb 280se 4.5 is quite nice, but after I starte the car and put the shifter from Park to Drive the car feels like it takes a shake up front. It happens only when you put the gear in and the transmission bumps in. It is like a bump and shake on the whole car.

any thoughts??

cK

I'd also be looking at the motor and tranny mounts.

If your engine mounts look like mine, you definitely need new ones. The "arms" are riding on the metal shell of my mounts, I'm sure the engine shocks are gone, and I shudder to think what the tranny mount looks like.

You also certainly have collapsed front subframe mounts, get them replaced. It will raise the front of the car an inch or more, and eliminate the "wander" on the highway, too.

I'd also bet the flex disk is dead, too, although they don't seem to die so fast on these cars -- the one on my 220D is still good, but sees only a quarter of the horsepower, at most! If it is, you will also get some thumps on downshifts.

You don't want to hear this, but it could possibly be generated from inside the tranny.

Don't forget idle speed setting and vacuum leaks. Both can be out of wack.
