Don't be surprised if getting belts from a Mercedes dealer is kind of expensive.
I needed a seatbelt for the backseat for a baby carrier type thingy, was quoted about US$ 400 for the correct model. The one I eventually got from the local parts store cost about US$ 25. Problem free installation.

If you're not going to maintain it as a show car and plan to drive it frequently, I'd recommend a set of modern lap and shoulder belts, with or without retractors. Whatever safety flaws my 220S might have (compared to modern vehicles) I feel much better having a decent set of belts in the car, even if they're not Kangols.

If I recall correctly, DB produced a technical service bulletin in the early-mid 80's regarding the retrofitting of W116 or W123 (don't hold me to these chassis numbers) retractable seat belts/shoulder harnesses to Kangol-belt equipped W108/109's. I recall reviewing this tsb on a private website (maybe mercedes-veterans?) last year.

My Kangols spontaniously disconnect as I drive my 72 108 which I find most un-german like, then I read the back and find they're made in England though curiously not by Lucas Ltd. But they gotta go, correct or not, I like the steering wheel but not enough to eat it.

My '72 250 sedan uses retractable German belts made by KLIPPAN. They never come unhitched but they ARE 30 years old - it's probably time for replacement. I think my 250C has the Kangols.

I've discovered that you must keep the Kangol buckled belts pulled up fairly tight to keep the latched. Never come apart under load, but if they are loose, will come undone rather easily.
Not very comfortable, strapped down like that. I think this is one of the reasons for the retractable locking kind -- no one wanted to wear the others, and a loose belt is probably worse than none, causes serious injury to accelerate, then hit the belt. Peter

MB CD says : Standard equipment on the vehicle are points of attachment for safety belts, so that safety belts can be installed susequently at any time at one of our service stations. DAN
