'72 SE 4.5: Do I need a new transmission?

Ok. I'm an enthusiast, not a mechanic. My mechanic who love$ me says I have some leaks on my transmission seals and that my transmission pump is leaking as well. He suggests a new transmission as fixing all of the above costs over 700.00 in labor and it ultimately doesn't fix the transmission. He suggests a rebuilt tranny for about $2500.00.

Please let me know what you guys think. Help.

Tranny Observations and Stats:

Just over 100,000 miles.

I've had a few minor transmission slips at high speed, no longer than 1/2 a second.

When I shift, I have to wait a second or two for the gears to engage.

I have small transmission fluid drips.

There are times, mostly in cold weather when first rolling out for the day, when the engine (or maybe the tranny) stutters horribly and I can't get ove 30mph. Sometimes, shutting the engine off and starting again makes it stop.

Three years ago I had mine rebuilt. $963.00 out the door with rebuilt torque converter. Make sure and have them mic the front housing pump area.

It sounds like you have some cold-running problems that may be unrelated to the transmission.

I would not get too excited about some minor drips, and a new modulator and/or an adjustment might fix your shifting problems.

IMHO, if you do need major transmission work, it probably makes sense to install a rebuild, since you have the large fixed expense of R/R'ing the unit in any case.

What do you mean "mic" the front housing pump area. Remember, I'm the guy who gives the money to people who actually know what they're doing.

The front pump is recessed in to the bell housing. If the bell housing is warped or the recess (hole) is too big it will leak and or perform badly. By saying to mic the area I meant to say measure it.
