Unhappy 1972 280SE 4.5 How to fix column transmission shift indicator

My column transmission shift indicator got stuck in R (Reverse) and upon moving the shifter back and forth between D and P to see if it goes back to P (Park) I felt some sort of a snag and the indicator moved to P and would not move again. Something defenitly broke. Has anyone had this problem and what is going to take to fix it. Thanks in advance.

There is a bowden cable between the dash indicator and the shift linkage. If the linkage is attached and moving the lever on the transmission (if you can operate it), this cable is broken, or the dash indicator itself is broken.

If the lever on the transmission isn't moving, the linkage has come apart and you will have to re-attached the open link.
