Can give you what I saved from my last search. The conversion is with a Redline Weber 38 DGAS which retains the orginal air filter. One big caveat here although. They are not allowed for street use in California.
http://www.redlineweber.com/html/Aplication_guide/MERCEDES.htm http://www.redlineweber.com/html/Tech/38_dgas_parts_breakdown.htm http://www.carbs.net/Weber/Dataresults3.asp?Kit_Nbr=K248&Model=250,%20280%20,%20280C%20,%20280S Have not seen this installed, or know anyone locally who has done a converstion. Phil @ Parts shop can also get them and give you more information. |

Thanks Bill, I got my Sube 32/36 adapter from these guys... very nice to work with.... found the weber here locally off an old MG I think.. just $200 rebuilt... which I thought was a great price... and it really makes my 1800 pushrod sube engine scream.... Wonder how hard it will be to find that 38....to retain the original air cleaner sure makes it look like it came from the factory that way... very cool... Thanks again...

Well we ripped off the old carb and decided to change it because the throttle shaft was worn. But the lower gasket looked fine.
We are installing a Holley 390 Vacuum secondary 4bbl and we found an adapter plate that would bolt on (a little machining) I'll post some pics soon. and other details soon. Fitting the adapter plate and carb on soon. modifying the stock air cleaner to fit. GOODBYE SOLEX! |

Good to hear you are well on the way to solving the carb problem. A Holley eh? Good choice! The four barrel on the M110 engine makes it come alive for sure. The Weber is a good carb as well, and will save on gas, but a 4 bbl sure is fun.
Post pics when you can, would like to see it. |

So far so good we started up the car tonite and it runs perfect idles perfect. now we just gotta hook up the linkage! Took us a while to figure out the vac lines without a manual. the advance control is all manual right? controlled by the distributor? or is there a black box somewhere? I dont think they had electronic timing back then?
The sound of the engine even sounds smoother. can't wait to drive it! |

u da man!
I am not sure about the '76, but the early engines had a vacuum mechanism controlled by a little nest of relays by the driver's side headlight. The whole mess was designed to work with the Solex. So what I would suggest is - If no vacuum line, no problem. It there is a vacuum line, run it to a vacuum fitting on the carb or manifold, and play with the timing. Can't wait to see pictures and details!

Chuck is correct. The vacuum connections mainly run to a series of vacuum valves near the drivers headlight. The only one which does not get a full volume of vacuum is the brown line. It is a ported vacuum from the primaries and leads to a vacuum booster. This is a black round shaped device also next to the headlight. But if you do not plan to hook up the emissions this could be eliminated.

Speedtec:
As old as that car is, I suspect you can ignore the vacuum except for the ported advance line to the advance side of the vac diaphram. You won't get the retard at idle, but the car is old enough not to be required to pass OEM emissions anyway, probably. The Holley is a good carb, and the vac secondaries will compensate for the fact it is somewhat too large for the engine -- they may in fact hardely ever open, but that isn't a bad thing if you don't need them. You will have no drivability problems, and should get decent milage, too. There is a mechanical advance in the distributor, but I don't know if it is enough on it's own. You may need the vac advance to get good operation at speed. Peter

Can't wait to hear the drive report!!
I have a '75 280C that has been sitting idle for a while because of that damned Solex. If all goes well with your Holley conversion, please post the details (what adapter plate, carb. model, etc.). Thanks and hope it works!!

Gimpie,
You must have a faulty odometer. I have never seen a carb model M110 motor get over 15 MPG. If you are really getting that kind of mileage, I wouldn't even dare to tune it up. Speadtech, I think you made a wise choice changing carbs. As I recall, you said someone cranked down on the 4 corner mounting bolts. This means the air horn is warped beyond help and the secondaries won't work properly. To all Solex Owners, In my opinion this is the worst carb MB ever installed, however, here are some tips. The floats in these things can soak up fuel and get heavy. You end up with harb starting on hot days. The float can be checked on a tripple beam or electronic scale. It should weigh 7 or 8 grams. If it weighs more, replace it. Also there is a tool that sets a weight on the secondary flap so you can adjust the tension spring til the flap just cracks open. The tool comes with 3 different weights for the different years. The little o rings on the idle mixture screws are critical. I used to put a little silicone paste on them to make the screws turn easy without destroying the o rings. Peter

Well the car is running and linkage is hooked up. we revved up the engine and drove it around the parking lot. and it was fine.
we are almost out of gas so we didn't wan't to drive it into the street. we had to guess on the Fuel Pressure (the holley likes 4-5 psi). we stuck a 1/16" restrictor in the return line. The only thing is we lost the vac connection to the door locks which hose is it? Total time for the conversion has been 3 hours. The adapter plate bolted up with a little grinding. The air cleaner sits 1" higher but everything works out ok. I will take my camera tomr and take some pics. so far we spent: Carb: $300 (Hawaii prices higher) Plate: $28 Misc: $50 3 hours labor. Tuning time=??? (working on it) Has a lot more punch than the original carb! we did this at the customers house! no special tools. |

u da man (again)!
The door vacuum should run off a fitting on the intake manifold in back of the carb. You might have knocked it off. Pictures! Details! - like where did you get the adapter, and how did you rig up the air cleaner?

Door lock supply is a yellow plastic vac line.
A Holley should make for a very happy car! Peter
