280 - M110 exhaust manifold (thermal reactor) leak
My 1975 has a manifold leak somewhere near the head causing the carb to do funny things like flooding out and sticking high idle. On a recent hot day and highway driving the car began to stall. When I went under the hood to remove the air cleaner to investigate I burned my hand on the air cleaner housing while removing it. Hot enough to blister the skin on four fingers. I suspect the high heat from the leak in the thermal reactor which is somewhere in the middle of the head and blowing out at the air cleaner housing is somehow screwing up the carb (solex 4a1). After sitting for a while the car will run again but the idle has not been the same since. Most of the time it sticks at a higher than normal range.
I know I need to find and fix the leak but I can't tell how to remove the manifold/reactor. I don't see any access to remove it. I also think the carb is warped or something else got cooked so looking at least at a rebuild on that. Can anyone tell me how to remove the manifold and what to expect when I do? Are there gaskets or sealing rings to replace? Maybe a cracked casting? Anything special to look for in the carb that would be influenced by high heat? |

Do I have this correct? You are saying a hole in your cat conv is causing your Solex to stall? I'm pretty sure the cat is on the passenger side of the engine and the Solex is on the drivers side. The only thing in common with the Solex and the cat is the air cleaner. The air cleaner usually takes hot air in from the cat via a hole. Are you talking about this?

There was a post on this while back, so you might try a search on "thermal". There were a bunch of resources identified.
The removal of the thermal reactors is just like the exhaust manifold. I can send you the instructions from the CD if you want. Send me an e-mail. Unless you are prohibited from doing so by smog regulations, your best option is to convert to the regular manifolds as the TR's are very hard to find and very bad news in how they operate. You may well have warped some of the surfaces of the carb. This will be a challenge. Good luck.

Did a search at Adsit for a TR, the link is:
http://www.adsitco.com/exh.html They have two listed for a 280S. One is $119 and the other is $995, but think the higher priced one may apply. If the Solex is shot as well, time to think about look at a conversion. Understand the Weber 38 DGAS does nicely on a 280S. |
