Cylinder Head Parts

The replacement head I got for my M130 engine did not come with the mount for the temp and coolling nozzle. I'm trying to remove the ones off an old head but they don't want to budge.

Should I try to find new parts or just keep applying heat and wrench with hammer to the old ones???

Strange we were just discussing a similar problem on our mbcoupes list. When mine seized on my 250, I use the heat and beat method to get them those.

Good luck,
Chet

I think I need more heat.. I have this puny little butane torch ...maybe a propane torch and a correctly sized open ended wrench will help. I've got two spare heads to demolish in case I damage anything.. woohoo!

Propane torches and hi-temp nozzles (NOT the ones you use for plumbing, that won't get hot enough) will do the job very well. I use it on rusted bolts/nuts all the time

You should be able to get these parts - probably special order - from a dealer with a good parts department. They are in the parts book for the 250C/280C, Group 01/02, and I believe that they are #'s 162, 163, 164 for the heater fitting and 173 & 175 for the temp guage fitting.

If you can't get them locally, try Rusty or Gary at 800 741 5252.

Good luck.

Ok I've sent out my part requests.. I guess I got carried away with the whole DIY thing ;-)

You may think I like to do things backwards but I finally rebuilt my carbs and they work great! Now I need to put the new cylinder head on obviously. I just wantd to make sure that the engine was relatively tuned up before taking it apart.. is that weird? I just needed to know that I could get it running well before totally tearing it apart.

I also got one of those flourescent oil kits to find my oil leaks and have determined that the main sources of the leaks are the oil pan and one of the ballstuds over the sparkplugs is leaking quite a bit which explains why I kept seeing oil pool up around that plug.

One last thing.. I wanted to paint my exhaust manifold with hi-temp red paint. Is that a bad idea? Is it cheesy? will the paint just burn off after awhile? I'm just trying to punk out the engine I guess ;-)

OK I have special ordered these dealer only parts. If I'm lucky it will only take few days to get them otherwise it will be several weeks to get them from Germany.

They weren't that cheap either. The temp housing was $60 and the heater nozzle was $20 (not as bad). If it were easier to get them off the old head then I would have saved a little money but not much because I hade to buy a torch and a 36mm socket to attempt the removal. I willneed the socket to install the heater nozzle and I'm sure I'll find something to do with the torch eventually.

I guess I could start the putting the head on anyway but I think I'll wait to see how long I'll be waiting before I start even though they are not essential to completing the bulk of the work.
