2.8/110 6 cylinder engine interchange info needed.

I posted this on the "Tech Help" BBS yesterday...I'll try here and see if someone can help me out.

I've got a customer's '76 280SL in the shop, a Euro spec/grey market car with an EXTREMELY sick 2.8. Cam lobes missing, smokes, compression (or lack therof) and leakdown numbers will scare you. Being Euro-spec...this has the (rather crude) older D-Jetronic FI. My customer's located a 2.8 out of a late '70's 280CE (completely different FI system) that's *supposedly* good. Will this engine interchange, assuming I strip and dress it like a "long block" with all of the ancillary stuff off the Euro motor?

Thanks a ton for any info. I don't want to learn "it ain't the same" the hard way.

Uh, I'm in Atlanta at the moment and don't have access to my books, but I don't think that this will work. Presume you are talking about the M110 from the 123 body cars?

This is a completely different animal from the M130 in the 280SL. About its only similarity is that it is a 2.8.

I do not think that it will accept the transmission from the 280SL either.

More info...

Thanks, Chuck.....but unless I'm mistaken (and I could be....I'm a "diesel" guy..) this '76 Euro SL is equipped with the 110 engine....at least that's what the (limited) manuals I've got for it indicate. Does this mean it will fit?

Thanks....

Jim

DOH! Sorry - I thought you had an earlier 113SL.

If they're both 110's then you should be OK. I put a later block in my '73, and the only problem I had was that I had to have the hole in the center of the flywheel reamed out to take the hub of the torque converter.
