Help Me Out!!!!

alright i am looking at getting a 1959 MB 220s. i don't know anything about these older cars but know alot about BMWs and old Volvos. it doesn't scare me at all. here is the info that i know on it.

it has the 6cyl with 2 carbs. engine and carbs are rebuilt. 4 door manual. everything is original and intact. the radio and clock are all there. it has the full sliding sun roof that is the full size of the roof. no rust or dings. was running but now has a starter problem. all service from the last 20+ years. lots of parts come with it.

to make it look nice i would have the seats redone and the paint striped and put back on. thats it

the guy is asking $3600 for it. i think is an awsome deal. tell me what you think. how rare is this car? whats its value? what are parts like? any more info would be great. thanks

luke

Luke:

If it is in really good condition, and there are no major problems, $3600 isn't a bad price.

Dan:

I have the guts for your master cylinder, will try to get them in UPS tomorrow. We are having an icy snow and everything is locked up here -- saw the first sand truck at 7:00 pm, snow started at 6:00 am.....

I've got a '59 220S cabriolet, http://www.mbzponton.org/pax058/people/sokoloff/sokoloff.htm. Have had it for about six years. Parts are pretty readily available and reasonable. It's amazing what Mercedes still carries for these cars. See http://www.mbzponton.org/index.htm for more info about the pontons than you can imagine. Consider joining the ponton discussion list at It's a group of about 160 ponton owners who are very, very knowledgeable about the cars.

It sounds like a nice car and a fair price, but insist on driving it before you buy it to make sure the major components (engine, trans, rear end, brakes, suspension) are working.

Make sure there is no major rust, especially in the floors or frame. Rust is very bad news in these cars.

The guys that go for these cars want the cabriolets, so there is not a lot of demand for the 4-doors. If you put an interior in it and paint it, you are under water, so you should plan on keeping and enjoying it for a while.

for one thing there is NO rust. i have already checked that out.

so what are you saying the car is not worth more than $7500?

i was told that the 4 doors with the full sun roof broght in some more cash and are pretty rare? correct me if i am wrong.

Can't be an SE. E is for fuel-injected only.

A sunroof is a nice addition and does make the car more rare, but there just are not a lot of people wanting to buy these cars. If you paint it and put a new interior in it, you end up with maybe a #3- car.

From what I have seen of the market, $7500 would be a lot of money for it.
