Should I re-torque my head after new gasket?
Should I re-torque my head after new gasket?
68 250S M108? or M180?

Actually I need to do mine (M130) as I have driven if for about 300 miles after replacing the gasket. I woul diamgine that you'd have to as well for yours but I don't know for sure.

On the models up to the 250 (six cylinder 220 S and 220 SE) the procedure was to torque the head cold to: 29 ft lbs, 44 ft lbs, 52 ft lbs. Then warm it up to 80 degrees C and tighten it to 65 ft lbs. Drive it 12 miles and check it at 65 ft lbs. Reset the valve clearance. Drive it 300 miles and check the head bolts again at 65 ft lbs. My manauls don't specify a different procedure for the 250.

Robby,
Thanks for the reply. It just seemed that 52 lbs was kinda weak. And I just read the owners manual (recently acquired) that says to tighten bolts on a warm engine.

FORGET about what the manuals say . . .
Many of the manuals were written WAY BACK . . . Go by the sheet that comes with the gasket set . . . as gasket technology has drastically changed since the manuals were written . . . MANY modern head gaskets are a ONE TIME torque gasket that replace the OLDER types that require re-torquing . . . |
