ctaylor738, This seems to be a common occourance on the 380's. I found this out as I have an engine out of a friend of mines '85 380se. The car only had 140,000 on it and the same thing happened...His wife came home, shut it off, later came out to start it and no-go. It had a chain guide (Lower?) break apart and lodge in the timing chain and cause it to jump time. It broke 2 rocker arms, bent valves and popped a crack on the left valve cover. This damage was only done with the starter!! We pulled it out and sent it to Metric Motors for a complete overhaul. Mike, the owner of M.Mtrs, said that this happens on shut down as the chain and guides wear. He said that the engine, while coasting to a stop after the key is shut off, can go backwards from a piston on compression stroke just before it comes to a complete stop. This aparently alows the chain to slack against the tensioner and loosen enough to jump time.
I would carefully consider checking ALL of the chain guides and replacing them. My $.02 Chris

Good data.
Does anyone have pictures of the timing marks?
Pictures of the single row and double row chain would be nice also.

My Timing chain DIY has some good pics of the timing marks on the hub. I didnt like the crpapy pic of the timing marks aligned so I took another pic a while back of my spare cam and was going to ask Bill to replace the pic in the article with it.
