The tops are split open.. it's more than a crack to be sure but I had never noticed it until today when I had the rear of the car jacked up really high. The lowers are intact. The boots aren't terribly expensive but I can only imagine what it will take to replace them.. I guess I'll have to look at the manual. Oh yeah and the rear subframe mounts looked kindof crusty..I still need to do the front ones as well.

Why comforts?

I will be doing same in a month or so. Why did you not choose the HD's all around. I've been following the posts but don 't know why you chose the comforts. I am thinking of the HD's for my 86' 420

The Bilsteins come in four different categories: comfort, standard, heavy duty and sport. Comfort is a very soft Cadillac kind of ride and standard is what matches the factory specs. Heavy duty will difinitely have a harsher ride and sport will feel every crack in the road. Count on around $80 per shock as a good price with the fronts cheaper than the rear. I chose the standard for my 63 220SEb cabriolet.

Hmmmm....., I have looked at and priced Bilstein shocks and have only seen three different kinds: comfort, HD, and Sport. The Comfort shocks are what came on the car originally, and I guess would be the same as "standard".

The Sport shocks are used on the Sportline suspension and can only be used with the shorter sportline springs.

HD's are just that - heavy duty - and can be used with the stock springs.

I notice that many people here put on the HD shocks, but I don't think I would want to. The comfort shocks control the ride beautifully, and I don't know why I would want it any firmer.

The comfort shocks, IMHO, are not nearly as soft as a Cadillac.

I'm pretty happy withthe comfort shocks . I went for a long drive yesterday and the car pretty much glides over rough pavement. When I got onto the open highway the car felt like it was floating on air at 80. The car is also handling curves much better.. before it felt like it was nose diving into curves but now it takes them much easier.

Cadillacs ride like crap compared to Benz'zzzesss.

My 88 ElDorado is very stiff and crashy, but floaty over the whoop de doos. New shocks too! $400!!

My old 240D was magic! Never drove a more comfy suspension ever! Better than my 69 Caddy, or my 71 (which was pretty fair).
