'77 280 Sel

Hi all,

i just purchased a beautiful orange '77 280SEL. i'm looking for some parts for it, and everywhere i look, i find a 280SE and a 280E, but no 280SEL for this year. can i buy 280SE parts for it? it is clearly marked 280SEL on the car, any idea why there's no mention of this model on any of the websites i've checked?

thanks,
-kelly

Not quite "vintage", but I'll give a shot.

The only difference between an SE and an SEL is the length of the body, with the driveshaft, roof and rear door being about 4-5 inches longer than the SE. "L" stands for Lange.

You'll also need to check the build date to be sure what year you have as German model years do not match US model years. Prime example is my 4.5. It's registered as a '73, but the W108/109's were only built up to 1972. Another likelyhood is that your car is a Euro which had been imported rather than one built for the US market. The Euro models come with many different trim levels, and other engine options.

All that said, for the most part the SE and SEL share most of the same parts. Euro models will likely have different engine part numbers, and if your's is a Euro, you'll need to order the correct part(s) by number.

Hehehe, uhm vintage is in the eye of the beholder .

Actually, I hadn't noticed the change. Used to read "1975 and earlier". OK, we'll let you in the club now.

The "vintage" refers to the cars? I always thought it referred to the owners

What are the first six digits of the the VIN on the 280? I have this feeling that they are 116.024. You may have a re-badged 280SE.

No - I meant the 280SEL - I don't think there was such a car in 1977. There was a 280SE. I think the last 280SEL was in 1973.

yes, the first six are 116 024. so basically, someone just slapped a 280 SEL badge on there for some reason? interesting. i'll see if i can find the right badge. :-)
