Question about heating (W110 Fintail)
Has anyone experience with, or knowledge about exchanging the heater motor on a 200-D W110 Fintail (early '68 model)?
Someone told me that this was a tough job and therefor pretty expensive (up to US$1200 !!!!) But I can hardly believe this, could it be THAT expensive    |
Hello Palestrina, and welcome to the forum!
The heater motors are not that expensive (you should call it a motor, not an engine) and can be bought through FastLane on this site. The problem is simply the location of the fan and the amount of work necessary to get to it. If you do it yourself, you will save the labor cost. But, not $1200! That's silly! |
I could see it being $1200 if you took it to a shop and handed them a blank check. I removed the heater on a 220SE fintail, many years ago. Easier job than on the later, AC equipped, 114/115 body cars. One caution, for whoever winds up doing the job. The plastic heater cases become brittle and crack around the mounting points for screws and control cables. Some fabrication or reinforcement to the heater case may be needed to get it all back together.

Thanks !
Thanks a lot 4 your reply !
very useful information. Perhaps I'll try and do it myself indeed. greetings from Amsterdam /the Netherlands Jan (Palestrina5) |
Did the job on my '73 280/8 several years ago..... You will spend alot of time squirming around under the dash - removing entire heater box, hoses and cable linkage that should be marked with masking tape for re-assembly.
Some people believe that early mercedes were built entirely aroung the heater motor. One suggestion - remove the passenger seat.... This will give you more room for sprawling around on your back. |
hi DieselDog,
two very useful suggestions, that I sure will follow :p ! I haven't bought the car in question yet, but wanted to get a picture of what is ahead of me . Think I'll buy the car anyway. thanks again. regards, Jan |
