71 280SL Fuel Injection Pump Solenoid LeaK
I believe that the deceleration solenoid on the rear of my FI pump
has a leak. The solenoid had drops of oil on the bottom several times. I wipe it off and it re-appears. It may be coming from the end where the wire from the relay attaches to the solenoid. Seems odd. Can't see how the solenoid itself could contain oil, so perhaps the leak is at the point where it attaches to the body of the FI pump. Anyone have any ideas? Hi Toms,
Don't know why noone has responded to your post, how rude! I don't know what your pump looks like, but if it drives off the engine as a mechanical pump, it might be the gasket which seals the pump/engine junction...?

Tom,
My Mercedes factory shop manual only goes up to '67 and doesn't show a 'decel' or fuel cut off solenoid. My Haynes manual covers through '72 and shows a 'fuel cut off' solenoid but doesn't show an exploded veiw or dissassembly instructions. Most likely, there's a gasket or 'O' ring seal between the solenoid and the fuel injection unit. There's still the possibility oil could be seeping through between the solenoid body and the insulator. I'd replace the gasket/seal first, then see what happens. I'd feel more comfortable if I had a copy of the factory manual to consult beforehand. Happy Motoring, Mark
